Carl Sohn
Karl Ferdinand Sohn (10 December 1805 in Berlin – 25 November 1867 in Cologne) was a German painter of the Düsseldorf school of painting. Biography He was born in Berlin and started his studies at the age of eighteen under Wilhelm von Schadow, whom he followed to Düsseldorf. He focused on mythical and poetic subjects of a highly romantic character, and painted in the idealistic manner of the Düsseldorf school. He visited Italy (1830–1831) and adopted ideas from the works of the Venetians; Titian, Paolo Veronese, and Palma il Vecchio. In 1832, he was named a Professor at the Düsseldorf Academy, where he exercised an important influence. On 18 January 1834, he married Emilie Auguste von Mülmann in Düsseldorf. They had five children. His two sons Paul Eduard Richard Sohn (1834–1912) and Karl Friedrich Rudolf Sohn (1845–1908) also grew up to be painters. Composer
A composer is a person who writes music. The term is especially used to indicate composers of Western classical music, or those who are composers by occupation. Many composers are, or were, also skilled performers of music. Etymology and Definition The term is descended from Latin, ''compōnō''; literally "one who puts together". Ludwig Von Milewski
Ludwig von Milewski, also Ludwig Milewsky (24 August 1825 – 10 May 1849), was a Polish painter. He was shot dead on a barricade as a leader of revolutionary street fighters in the 1849 May uprising in Düsseldorf. Life Milewski was born in Kalisz, Congress Poland. Little is known about his life. Between 1844 and 1845 he had studied painting with Karl Ferdinand Sohn. Sohn was one of the teachers at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf who, together with their students, took part in the events during the German revolutions of 1848-1849. For example, he had designed an allegorical Germania statue for the "Festival of German Unity", which was organised by the Democrats on 6 August 1848 on Friedrichsplatz in Düsseldorf. In May 1849 the revolution also came to a head in the Rhine Province. Clemens Bewer
Lambert Clemens Jakob Bewer (30 May 1820, Aachen – 2 September 1884, Bonn) was a German history and portrait painter, in the Romantic style. Biography He began his art studies in the master class of Karl Ferdinand Sohn at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. In 1841, he continued his studies in Paris and Rome. Working in the studios of Paul Delaroche, he acquired his knowledge of coloring technique, then learned copper engraving with Ary Scheffer. He was also required to make copies of works by the Old Masters, such as Raphael, Andrea del Sarto, Titian, Peter Paul Rubens, and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, which were put to use in several small churches. He returned to Düsseldorf in 1847, where he became associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule; a connection he would maintain for over thirty years. Heinrich Ludwig Philippi
Heinrich Ludwig Philippi (9 June 1838, Kleve – 16 September 1874, Düsseldorf) was a German history painter; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. He was primarily known as a watercolorist. Biography His father, was a jurist and member of the Prussian House of Representatives for Elberfeld. After completing his secondary education in 1857, he took an extended study trip to Berlin, Frankfurt and Dresden, with the intention of becoming an artist. In Dresden, Eduard Bendemann, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, to whom he was distantly related, advised him to attend the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, which he did. While there, he studied with Wilhelm Sohn and Adolph Schroedter. He also studied architecture with Rudolf Wiegmann and art history with Carl Müller (1818-1893). Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann
Anna Maria Elisabeth Lisinska Jerichau-Baumann (21 November 1819 – 11 July 1881) was a Polish-Danish painter. She was married to the sculptor Jens Adolf Jerichau. Early life and career Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann was born in Żoliborz (French: ''Joli Bord'') a borough of Warsaw. Her father Philip Adolph Baumann (1776–1863), a mapmaker, and her mother, Johanne Frederikke Reyer (1790–1854), were of German extraction. At the age of nineteen, she began her studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf which at the time was one of the most important art centres in Europe and her early subject matter was drawn from Slovak life. She is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. She began exhibiting there and in 1844 attracted public attention for the first time. Marie Wiegmann
Marie Elisabeth Wiegmann (7 November 1820 – 4 December 1893) née Hancke, was a German genre and portrait painter who worked in Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands. She studied under artists Karl Ferdinand Sohn and Hermann Stilke. She was a celebrated painter throughout her more than 50-year career. Biography Marie Wiegmann was born 7 November 1820 in Silberbeg, Silesia, now modern-day Srebrna Góra, a Polish town in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship. In 1841, at the age of 21, she became a pupil of Düsseldorf Academy. She studied first under Hermann Stilke, then later under the German artist Karl Ferdinand Sohn, who also illustrated a portrait of her. She was regarded at the time as one of the greatest students of Sohn, and she won a gold medal in Berlin for one of her works. Wilhelm Sohn
Johann August Wilhelm Sohn (29 August 1829, in Berlin – 16 March 1899, in Pützchen, near Bonn) was a German genre painter and art professor. Life Johann August Wilhelm Sohn was born 29 August 1829, in Berlin, Germany. In 1847, he went to Düsseldorf, where he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (Düsseldorf Art Academy) with Rudolf Wiegmann, Theodor Hildebrandt, Wilhelm von Schadow and his uncle, Karl Ferdinand Sohn. After that, he supplemented his studies by traveling extensively. In 1861, he married his cousin, Sophie Emilie (Emmy) Sohn, making Karl Ferdinand his uncle and father-in-law.
