Cargotec Corporation
Cargotec Oyj (trading internationally as Cargotec Corporation) is a Finnish company that makes cargo-handling machinery for ships, ports, terminals and local distribution. Cargotec was formed in June 2005 when Kone Corporation was split into two companies to be listed: Cargotec and new KONE. After the split, KONE Corporation's container handling (Kalmar Global), load handling (HIAB) and marine cargo handling (MacGregor) business units formed Cargotec. However, the businesses within Cargotec have much longer histories and have been formed through a series of mergers and acquisitions over several decades. At the end of 2021, Cargotec had approximately 11,200 personnel working in over 100 countries. Cargotec's major shareholders are the heirs of Pekka Herlin. A reach stacker is a vehicle used for handling intermodal cargo containers in small terminals or medium-sized ports. Reach stackers are able to transport a container short distances very quickly and pile them in various rows depending on its access. Reach stackers have gained ground in container handling in most markets because of their flexibility and higher stacking and storage capacity when compared to forklift trucks. Using reach stackers, container blocks can be kept 4-deep due to second row access. There are also empty stackers or empty container handlers that are used only for handling empty containers quickly and efficiently. Pekka Herlin
Pekka Aksel Herlin (15 July 1932 – 4 April 2003) was a Finnish businessman, the president of the elevator and escalator maker Kone from 1964. In 1954, Pekka Herlin joined Kone, and succeeded his father as president in 1964, and started planning a new elevator factory in Hyvinkää to replace the "cramped and inefficient" Helsinki plant. When he died in 2003, and it was discovered that he had rewritten his will in 1999, leaving most of the elevator and escalator maker Kone to his son Antti Herlin. Ilkka Herlin and his siblings Ilona and Niklas were unhappy about not being informed, and the dispute finally ended in 2005. The Kone company was split, with Antti receiving a majority stake in its core elevator business. Ilkka and his siblings received a majority of Cargotec and a minority stake in the new Kone company. Hydrauliska Industri AB (HIAB) is a Swedish manufacturer of loader cranes, demountable container handlers, forestry cranes, truck-mounted forklifts and tail lifts. The company is owned by the Cargotec Corporation. History The name, Hiab, comes from the commonly used abbreviation of Hydrauliska Industri AB, a company founded in Hudiksvall, Sweden 1944 by Eric Sundin, a ski manufacturer who saw a way to utilize a truck's engine to power loader-cranes through the use of hydraulics. A tail lift (term used in the UK, also called a "liftgate" in North America) is a mechanical device permanently installed on the rear of a work truck, van, or lorry, and is designed to facilitate the handling of goods from ground level or a loading dock to the level of the vehicle bed, or vice versa.
