Carel Hendrik Bartels
Carel Hendrik Bartels (29 September 1792 – 10 February 1850) was the wealthiest and most important Euro-African trader and businessman on the Dutch Gold Coast in the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Apart from his entrepreneurial activities, Bartels was also a judge and member of the colonial government in Elmina, making him one of the most important men in town. Bartels has an entry in Hutchison's '' The Pen-Pictures of Modern Africans and African Celebrities''. The American historian Larry W. Yarak found an engraving based on a photograph of Bartels in 1995. Biography Carel Hendrik Bartels was born in Elmina to Cornelius Ludewich Bartels, Governor-General of the Gold Coast, and the local Euro-African Maria Clericq. Elmina, also known as Edina by the local Fante people, Fante, is a town and the capital of the Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem Municipal District, Komenda/Edina/Eguafo/Abirem District on the south coast of Ghana in the Central Region, Ghana, Central Region, situated on a bay on the Atlantic Ocean, west of Cape Coast. Anthony Van Der Eb
Anthony van der Eb (born 3 January 1813 – 21 September 1852) was a Dutch civil servant, who made a career in the administration on the Dutch Gold Coast. Biography Van der Eb was born in Rotterdam on 3 January 1813 to Hendrik van der Eb and Marianne Jacoba Lessueur. On 5 October 1833, he was installed as assistant, with the military rank of second lieutenant, to the Dutch Gold Coast. After Acting Commander Hendrik Tonneboeijer died during the Dutch–Ahanta War, the young Van der Eb became Acting Commander himself between 1837 and 1838. When major general Jan Verveer visited the Gold Coast to avenge the Ahanta and to reform the government of the colony, he wrote the following about Van der Eb: Even though Verveer's report was not entirely positive, Van der Eb was installed as Governor of the Dutch Gold Coast by royal decree on 11 March 1840. Francis Lodowic Bartels
Francis Lodowic Bartels (13 March 1910 – 20 March 2010) was a Ghanaian diplomat and educationalist, who served as Ghana's ambassador to West Germany between 1970 and 1972. Biography Francis Bartels was born in Cape Coast to the Rev. Charles Henry Bartels (1885–1938), a Methodist minister, and Agnes Mensah (1887–1940). He stems from a prominent Gold Coast Euro-African family from Elmina. Carel Hendrik Bartels was his great-great-grandfather. One of his daughters is the Ghanaian diplomat, Agnes Aggrey-Orleans. Bartels attended the Mfantsipim School between 1925 and 1928 and the Wesley College of Education, Kumasi between 1929 and 1931. Hendrik Doijer Jzn (born 14 September 1830 – 13 April 1906) was a Dutch politician, who first made a career in the administration on the Dutch Gold Coast and who became interim governor during the European leave of governor Henri Alexander Elias on 13 June 1864, upon the death of his interim predecessor Carel van Hien. Martinus Swarte
Martinus Swarte (born 13 May 1813 – 8 April 1835) was a Dutch colonial administrator on the Gold Coast. He was interim commander in 1833. Biography Martinus Swarte was born in Amsterdam to Franciscus Swarte from Papenburg and Anna Sophia van der Aa from Haarlem. At age 16, on 2 March 1830, Martinus Swarte was appointed assistant on the Dutch Gold Coast. In March 1833, he became acting commander, after the previous acting commander Eduard Daniel Leopold van Ingen had died. He was relieved of his duties on 10 May 1833, when Christiaan Lans arrived from the Netherlands to replace him. At the end of 1833, he went on leave to Europe, but shipwrecked on the way home. Willem George Frederik Derx
Willem George Frederik Derx (born 8 May 1813 – 10 December 1890) was a Dutch civil servant, who made a career in the administration on the Dutch Gold Coast. Biography Derx was born in Nijmegen to Johan Henrich Derx, who was originally from the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel, contemporary Germany, and Maria Christina Lijtgen from Zaltbommel. Derx joined the colonial administration of the Dutch Gold Coast in 1838, when the colony was reorganized in the wake of the Dutch–Ahanta War. He eventually became bookkeeper and officer of justice of the colony. During governor Anthony van der Eb's year-long leave to the Netherlands between 1846 and 1847, Derx was acting governor. Hubertus Varlet (5 December 1810 – 4 October 1853) was a Netherlands, Dutch architect and colonial administrator, who served on the Dutch Gold Coast. In his capacity as master of works and stores, he rebuilt Ussher Fort, Fort Crèvecoeur in Accra in 1839. Following the promotion of Anthony van der Eb to governor of the Dutch Gold Coast, Varlet succeeded him as the second vice governor for the Fort Batenstein, Ahanta protectorate, which the Dutch had proclaimed following the conclusion of the Dutch–Ahanta War.
