Cardiff Naturalists Society
The Cardiff Naturalists' Society is a natural history and historical society based in Cardiff, Wales. The Cardiff Naturalists' Society was founded in 1867 to promote the study of natural history, geology, and the natural sciences, taking in archaeology and zoology. Its members participate in programmes of field visits and lectures, and the society has strong links with Cardiff museums and academic institutions. The society is still active and has close links to the Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum of Wales. The society built a library of over 10,000 volumes through exchange with other organizations worldwide. This library is still in existence and is housed in the National Museum Cardiff From 1867 to 1986 it published annual Reports and Transactions. These publications contain studies of the botany, zoology, geology, archaeology, history and meteorology of southeast Wales, including historical weather records. Cardiff
Cardiff (; cy, Caerdydd ) is the capital and largest city of Wales. It forms a principal area, officially known as the City and County of Cardiff ( cy, Dinas a Sir Caerdydd, links=no), and the city is the eleventh-largest in the United Kingdom. National Museum Cardiff
National Museum Cardiff ( cy, Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Caerdydd) is a museum and art gallery in Cardiff, Wales. The museum is part of the wider network of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales. Entry is kept free by a grant from the Welsh Government; however, they do ask for donations throughout the museum. History The National Museum of Wales was founded in 1905, with its royal charter granted in 1907. Part of the bid for Cardiff to obtain the National Museum for Wales included the gift of the Cardiff Museum Collection, then known as "Welsh Museum of Natural History, Archaeology and Art," which was formally handed over in 1912. The Cardiff Museum was sharing the building of Cardiff Library, and was a sub-department of the library until 1893. Mary Gillham
Mary Eleanor Gillham MBE (26 November 1921 – 23 March 2013) was a British naturalist, university lecturer, and writer, who was resident for many years in Gwaelod y Garth and then Radyr, in Cardiff, Wales until her death. Although born in a London suburb, and serving five wartime years in the Women's Land Army working on multiple farms, Mary Gillham spent much of her time in Wales. Harry Morrey Salmon
Harry Morrey Salmon CBE MC DL (1892 – May 1985) was a Welsh naturalist famed for his work in his own country and for his bird photography. Career He started his career as a photographer in 1909, joined the Cardiff Naturalists' Society in 1910, and had become a published author by 1914. He was hailed as the "Welsh ornithologist of the century" and as "the father of British bird photography." His photographic career started in 1908. He was the first to record the nocturnal activities of Manx Shearwater on the Pembrokeshire Islands and in 1924 he achieved another first by using his skill with a camera in choppy seas to obtain a census of the large colonies of Gannet on Grassholm. These memorable early photographs were used as illustrations in Birds in Britain Today which he and Geoffrey Ingram published in 1934. Eleanor Vachell
Eleanor Vachell (1879–1948) was a Welsh botanist who is remembered especially for her work identifying and studying the flora of Glamorgan and her connection with the National Museum of Wales where she was the first woman to be a member of its Council and Court of Governors. The museum now holds her botanical diary, notes, books, records and specimens. Early life She was the eldest child of Winifred and Charles Tanfield Vachell, a physician in Cardiff where she was born on 8 January 1879, followed in the 1890s by her brother Eustace and sister Sylvia. She went to school in Cardiff, Malvern, and Brighton.
