Cardiff MCCU
Cardiff South Wales MCC University, formerly Cardiff University Centre of Cricketing Excellence, commonly abbreviated to Cardiff MCCU, is one of six University Centres of Cricketing Excellence supported by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). It comprises Cardiff University, the University of South Wales and Cardiff Metropolitan University. Cardiff MCCU play three matches a year against first-class counties. For the first time, in 2012 two of these three matches were given first-class status. The first of these first-class matches was against Somerset, a regular early season fixture; it was held at Taunton Vale, additionally making it that ground's debut in holding first-class cricket. The former Cardiff University Centre of Cricketing Excellence team did not play first-class cricket. Somerset County Cricket Club
Somerset County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Somerset. Founded in 1875, Somerset was initially regarded as a minor county until official first-class status was acquired in 1895. Somerset has competed in the County Championship since 1891 and has subsequently played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. The club's limited overs team was formerly named the Somerset Sabres, but is now known only as Somerset. Somerset's early history is complicated by arguments about its status. Taunton Vale Sports Club Ground
Taunton Vale Sports Club (usually referred to as "Taunton Vale", "Vale" or "TVSC")''Wisden Cricketers' Almanack'' (2013) p 607 is a multi use community sports club located in Taunton, Somerset. Taunton Vale HC, Taunton Cricket and Taunton Vale Tennis Club are the resident sports clubs. It is also the regular home venue of both Somerset County Cricket Club's Second XI, Somerset CCC also holding many of their games against MCC Universities teams at the ground, which have so far included two first-class matches, in 2012 and 2015. The sports club has two county standard cricket fields and a pavilion, a sand dressed hockey ATP, a 3G pitch, 4 netball/tennis hard courts and a multi use sports hall. Wisden Cricketers' Almanack
''Wisden Cricketers' Almanack'', or simply ''Wisden'', colloquially the Bible of Cricket, is a cricket reference book published annually in the United Kingdom. The description "bible of cricket" was first used in the 1930s by Alec Waugh in a review for the ''London Mercury''. Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) is a cricket club founded in 1787 and based since 1814 at Lord's Cricket Ground, which it owns, in St John's Wood, London. The club was formerly the governing body of cricket retaining considerable global influence. In 1788, the MCC took responsibility for the laws of cricket, issuing a revised version that year. Changes to these Laws are now determined by the International Cricket Council (ICC), but the copyright is still owned by MCC. When the ICC was established in 1909, it was administered by the secretary of the MCC, and the president of MCC automatically assumed the chairmanship of ICC until 1989. The University of South Wales ( cy, Prifysgol De Cymru) is a public university in Wales, with campuses in Cardiff, Newport and Pontypridd. It was formed on 11 April 2013 from the merger of the University of Glamorgan and the University of Wales, Newport. The university is the second largest university in Wales in terms of its student numbers, and offers around 200 undergraduate and postgraduate courses. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but it was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. 2019 Marylebone Cricket Club University Matches
The 2019 Marylebone Cricket Club University Matches were a series of cricket matches that were played between the eighteen County Championship#teams, County Championship teams and the six List of current first-class cricket teams#England and Wales, Marylebone Cricket Club University teams (MCCU) of England and Wales. The first two rounds of fixtures were classed as first-class cricket, first-class matches. Each county side played one fixture against an MCCU side ahead of the start of the 2019 County Championship. In the opening round of fixtures, Alastair Cook scored 150 not out for Essex County Cricket Club, Essex against Cambridge University Cricket Club, Cambridge MCCU, in his first match since retiring from Test cricket.
