CardDAV
vCard Extensions to WebDAV (CardDAV) is an address book client/server protocol designed to allow users to access and share contact data on a server. The CardDAV protocol was developed by the IETF and was published as in August 2011. CardDAV is based on WebDAV, which is based on HTTP, and it uses vCard for contact data. History CardDAV was proposed as an open standard for contact management in August 2011. It became known as a synchronization protocol in iOS 7, among other things, and is now also supported by Gmail, where it replaces the no longer supported (by Google) ActiveSync standard. In October 2013, the standard received an update that made it possible to capture higher-resolution contact images and achieve lower data consumption. WebDAV (Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is a set of extensions to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), which allows user agents to collaboratively author contents ''directly'' in an HTTP web server by providing facilities for concurrency control and namespace operations, thus allowing Web to be viewed as a ''writeable, collaborative medium'' and not just a read-only medium. WebDAV is defined in by a working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). The WebDAV protocol provides a framework for users to create, change and move documents on a server. The most important features include the maintenance of properties about an author or modification date, namespace management, collections, and overwrite protection. Maintenance of properties includes such things as the creation, removal, and querying of file information. fruux is a cross-platform synchronization service operated by fruux, the company behind the popular open source project SabreDAV. The service enables users to synchronize address book contacts, calendar events, tasks, bookmarks and notes between Apple computers and other devices. DAViCal is a server for calendar sharing. It is an implementation of the CalDAV protocol which is designed for storing calendaring resources on a remote shared server. Although the events are stored in a SQL database the information between client and server is transferred in the iCalendar format. Calendar And Contacts Server
The Calendar and Contacts Server project is an Apple-developed standards-compliant server implementing the CalDAV and CardDAV protocols. It provides a shared location on the network allowing multiple users to store and edit calendaring and contact information. The server was publicly released during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on August 7, 2006 as iCal Server and Address Book Server. The server, named "", is a daemon background service. It has been ported to non-Apple computer platforms. It is currently possible to install it on FreeBSD and several flavours of Linux.
