Captain Ingram's Partisan Rangers
Captain Ingram's Partisan Rangers was the name given by the ''Sacramento Union'' to a band of about fifty Confederate States of America, Confederate Bushwackers organized from local Copperheads (politics), Copperheads and members of the Knights of the Golden Circle in 1864 by Rufus Henry Ingram in Santa Clara County, California. They committed the Bullion Bend Robbery and planned other raids before being broken up by the Union authorities. Newspapers of the time reported that Ingram had been a member of Quantrill's guerrilla band, but modern research has failed to confirm that. He came to California via Mexico with the intent of forming a Confederate guerrilla band on the Pacific Coast. Bushwackers
Bushwhacking was a form of guerrilla warfare common during the American Revolutionary War, War of 1812, American Civil War and other conflicts in which there were large areas of contested land and few governmental resources to control these tracts. This was particularly prevalent in rural areas during the Civil War where there were sharp divisions between those favoring the Union and Confederacy in the conflict. The perpetrators of the attacks were called bushwhackers. The term "bushwhacking" is still in use today to describe ambushes done with the aim of attrition. Bushwhackers were generally part of the irregular military forces on both sides. While bushwhackers conducted well-organized raids against the military, the most dire of the attacks involved ambushes of individuals and house raids in rural areas. Copperheads (politics)
In the 1860s, the Copperheads, also known as Peace Democrats, were a faction of Democrats in the Union who opposed the American Civil War and wanted an immediate peace settlement with the Confederates. Republicans started calling anti-war Democrats "Copperheads", after the eastern copperhead (''Agkistrodon contortrix''), a species of venomous snake. Those Democrats accepted the label, reinterpreting the copper "head" as the likeness of Liberty, which they cut from Liberty Head large cent coins and proudly wore as badges. By contrast, Democratic supporters of the war were called War Democrats. Notable Copperheads included two Democratic Congressmen from Ohio: Clement L. Vallandigham and Alexander Long. The Knights of the Golden Circle (KGC) was a secret society founded in 1854 by American George W. L. Bickley, the objective of which was to create a new country, known as the Golden Circle ( es, Círculo Dorado), where slavery would be legal. The country would have been centered in Havana and would have consisted of the Southern United States and a "golden circle" of territories in Mexico (which was to be divided into 25 new slave states), Central America, northern parts of South America, and Cuba, Haiti, Dominican Republic, and most other islands in the Caribbean, about in diameter. Rufus Henry Ingram
Rufus Henry Ingram (1834–unknown) was a bushwhacker who led Captain Ingram's Partisan Rangers that operated in California in 1864. Background In 1863, Rufus Henry Ingram met George Baker from San Jose, California, who had just come east to join the Confederate Army. Baker complained because the secessionists in California had no experienced leaders. Ingram claimed to have been with Quantrill's Raiders during the Lawrence Massacre and became interested in going back with Baker to recruit soldiers for the Southern cause. In early 1864, Rufus Henry Ingram arrived in Santa Clara County with a Confederate commission as captain and with a former undersheriff of Monterey County, Tom Poole, organized about fifty local Knights of the Golden Circle and commanded them in what became known as Captain Ingram's Partisan Rangers. Thomas Bell Poole
Thomas Bell Poole (1820–1865) was a lawman in Monterey County, who joined the Knights of the Golden Circle and served as a crewman of the Confederate privateer J. M. Chapman. Biography Poole was born in 1820 at Franklin County, Kentucky. He married Mary Caroline (Duff) Davis. He went to California during the Gold Rush and filed for a homestead in Monterey County. In 1856 he brought his family to Watsonville, California. In 1858 Poole become an Undersheriff for a Monterey County Sheriff, Henry DeGraw. He became known statewide for the hanging of the convicted murderer Jose Anastasio on February 12, 1858, despite the California Governor John B. Weller's order to postpone the execution. After Weller accused Poole of murder, Poole, supported by Monterey citizens, took part in public spat with the Governor mounting his defense on technicalities. The following is a List of California Civil War Confederate Units that were active between 1861 – 1866. Although California stayed in the Union, it was divided in its politics like many of the Border States. The southern part of the state had the majority of the southern sympathizers. In 1861, Los Angeles and El Monte formed two secessionist militia units. Following the Federals success at securing California most of the Southerners who still wished to fight left for the east overland via Mexico, New Mexico Territory or by sea to reach the Confederacy.
