Cape Town Tigers
Cape Town Tigers is a South African basketball club based in Cape Town. The team is located in the Gugulethu township. Established in 2019 by three American business partners, the club has won the South African national championship in 2021 and 2022. The Tigers currently play internationally in the Basketball Africa League (BAL), besides competing domestically in the South African National Basketball Championship. History The team was founded in 2019 by the organisation Severus LLC, founded by American business partners Chante Butler, Raphael Edwards. Dia Martin, and William McFarlan. The Severus company was established in order to develop a professional basketball team that could play in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) within 5 years. Basketball Africa League
The Basketball Africa League (BAL) is Africa's premier men's basketball league. The league consists of twelve teams, each qualified through their domestic competition, similar to the format of the UEFA Champions League. The league is a joint effort between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and International Basketball Federation (FIBA) with sponsorship from Nike, Inc., Nike, Air Jordan and Pepsi. Its 2021 BAL season, inaugural season started with the qualifying rounds in October 2019 and the regular season in May 2021. The competition replaces FIBA's Africa Basketball League as the continent's top-tier league. BAL president, Amadou Gallo Fall, announced at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game Africa Luncheon in Chicago, that the season will tip off on 13 March. City Oilers
City Oilers is a basketball club based in Lugogo, Kampala, Uganda. The team competes in the Ugandan National Basketball League (NBL), where it has won eight championships, the most in league history. The Oilers play in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) in the 2023 season. History The club was founded by a group of friends who decided to play basketball together. They started playing pick-up games at courts in Kampala, with former national league players joining. Later, Justus Mugisha became head coach and suggested the team joined a basketball league. In 2011, the team was pitched to the director of oil company City Oil and the team was founded as City Oilers. The team started in the NBL Division III in 2011. Myck Kabongo
Myck Lukusa Kabongo (born January 12, 1992) is a Congolese-Canadian professional basketball player who plays for the Cape Town Tigers of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). He played two seasons at the Texas Longhorns before going undrafted in the 2013 NBA draft. High school career Kabongo started his high school career at Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute in Toronto. He then played alongside fellow Canadian Tristan Thompson for a season-and-a-half at St. Benedict's Prep before Thompson was removed from the team and transferred to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada. Cleanthony Early (born April 17, 1991) is an American professional basketball player for Dynamo Lebanon of the Lebanese Basketball League. He was an All-American college player at Wichita State University after a stint at Sullivan County Community College. Early life and high school career Early was born in The Bronx. After Early's cousin was murdered, his mother decided to leave the city and relocate to suburban Middletown, New York when he was 14. Miguel Pedro Ho Ferrão (born 16 January 1996) is a South African-Portuguese basketball player for the Western Cape Mountaineers. In international competitions, Ferrão represents South Africa, although he competed for Portugal in the youth ranks. College career Ferrão attended University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and helped the Witwatersrand basketball team win the USSA national championship twice (in 2016 and 2018). Rasheed Hazzard
Rasheed Hazzard (born August 5, 1976) is an American basketball coach. He is the current head coach of the Cape Town Tigers of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Hazzard is the son of Walt Hazzard who played for the Los Angeles Lakers. He played collegiately for George Washington University. Career Hazzard started his coaching career as head coach of Venice High School in Los Angeles, staying there for five years. He then joined the college team Portland Pilots as assistant coach. In 2006, he entered the Los Angeles Lakers organisation where he had different roles over the next five seasons. He was a part-time scout for the Lakers, while also being an assistant for the NBA D-League's Los Angeles D-Fenders part-time. Michael Patrick Gbinije (born June 5, 1992) is a Nigerian-American professional basketball player for the Cape Town Tigers of the Basketball Africa League. He played one season of college basketball for Duke before transferring to Syracuse in 2012. He was drafted 49th overall by the Pistons in the 2016 NBA draft. Dhieu Abwok Deing (born 28 August 2001) is an American-South Sudanese basketball player for Dynamo of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). He played college basketball for the USC Aiken Pacers, Dodge City CC Conquistadors, and UTSA Roadrunners. High school and college career Deing attended High Point Central High School and was a three-time all-conference selection, as well as a two-time all-state and all-district honoree. Evans Ganapamo (born 19 August 1994) is a French-Central African professional basketball player for Bangui Sporting Club. He played college basketball at the University of New Orleans and Prairie View A&M University. Internationally, Ganapamo represents the Central African Republic national team. 2022 BAL Season
The 2022 BAL season, also known as BAL Season 2, was the second season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The season began on 2 March 2022 and ended with the Finals on 28 May 2022. The group phase was played in the Dakar Arena in Dakar and the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall in Cairo. The playoffs and finals were played in the BK Arena in Kigali for a second year in a row. Tunisian club US Monastir won the finals to win its first-ever BAL title, after defeating Angolan club Petro de Luanda in the 2022 BAL Finals. As winners, Monastir qualified for the 2023 FIBA Intercontinental Cup. Format On 9 December 2021, the BAL announced a new format for the season, with an expansion of the number of total games to 38.
