Cape Daly
Cape Daly () is an ice-covered promontory on the coast of Antarctica, west of Safety Island and close southeast of the Robinson Group. Safety Island
Safety Island () is a small coastal island east of Cape Daly, Antarctica, south of Auster Islands, and northwest of Landmark Point. Mapped by Norwegian cartographers from aerial photographs taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition, 1936–37. Robinson Group
Robinson Group () is a group of small islands extending in an east–west direction, lying close northwest of Cape Daly. The group was observed by British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) under Mawson, 1931, who named it after W.S. Robinson of Melbourne, a patron of the expedition. Essentially the same islands were observed in 1931 by the crew of the Norwegian whale catcher ''Thorgaut'', who gave them the name "Thorgautoyane". In concurrence with the recommendations by Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA), the name "Robinson" has been assigned to the whole group and the name "Thorgaut" to the most conspicuous island. British Australian New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition
The British Australian (and) New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) was a research expedition into Antarctica between 1929 and 1931, involving two voyages over consecutive Austral summers. It was a British Commonwealth initiative, driven more by geopolitics than science, and funded by the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. The leader of the BANZARE was Sir Douglas Mawson and there were several subcommanders (Captain K.N. MacKenzie, who replaced Captain John King Davis for the second summer) on board the RRS Discovery, the ship previously used by Robert Falcon Scott. The BANZARE, which also made several short flights in a small plane, mapped the coastline of Antarctica and discovered Mac. Robertson Land and Princess Elizabeth Land (which later was claimed as part of the Australian Antarctic Territory). John Daly (Australian Politician)
John Joseph Daly (10 November 1891 – 13 April 1942) was an Australian lawyer and politician who served as a Senator for South Australia from 1928 to 1935. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party until 1934, when he was expelled. During the Scullin Government he was the party's Senate leader, and held ministerial office as Vice-President of the Executive Council and briefly as Minister for Defence. Early life Daly was born at Hemington, now part of the Adelaide suburb of Thebarton, and educated at St John the Baptist School, Thebarton, but left at 13. He continued his education at Remington Training College and became an office-boy in the legal firm of Sir Josiah Symon and later conveyancing clerk for William Joseph Denny and Francis Villeneuve Smith. He was called to the bar in 1919 and handled much trade union work. He married Eva Bird in October 1918.
