The Cape Breton Highlanders were a Canadian professional basketball team based in Sydney, Nova Scotia. They were granted a hiatus from the National Basketball League of Canada for the 2019–20 season, but have no schedule to return. History In early June 2015, it was announced that Tyrone Levingston, the son of Halifax Rainmen owner Andre Levingston, was making an attempt to establish a basketball team in Sydney, Nova Scotia in Cape Breton Island. He drew attention from businessman Parker Rudderham and many other locals that were willing to become a part of the team's ownership. Instead of him being the sole owner, Levingston preferred to have a group of multiple investors. Atlantic Division (NBL Canada)
The National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada; french: Ligue nationale de basketball du Canada) is a Canadian professional men's minor league basketball organization. The NBL Canada was founded in 2011, when three existing Premier Basketball League teams joined with four new franchises for the league's inaugural season. Island Storm
The Island Storm is an inactive Canadian professional basketball team based in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The team is a charter member of the National Basketball League of Canada that began play in the 2011–12 season. The Storm plays its home games at the Eastlink Centre. Former Vermont Frost Heaves head coach Joe Salerno served as the team's head coach for the first six seasons until he parted ways with the team in May 2017. In 2021, the Storm were granted a one-year leave of absence after they were the last remaining team based in the Maritimes. Kenneth Terrell Jones (born July 22, 1984) is an American professional basketball player who formerly played for Hindú Club de Resistencia Chaco of the Torneo Nacional de Ascenso (TNA), the second-best league in Argentina. College career Jones originally committed to play college basketball for Saint Paul's in Virginia, but did not like it there and left after two months. He later came into contact with Kentucky State University recruiter Charles Coleman who got him to play for the college in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) of the NCAA Division II. Chadrack Lufile (born September 11, 1990) is a Congolese-Canadian professional basketball player who last played for the ABC Fighters of the Road to BAL. Internationally, he also plays for . Early life and high school career Lufile was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but left for Texas with his family as the age of three. At the age of seven, he moved to Canada. 2018–19 NBL Canada Season
The 2018–19 NBL Canada season is the eighth season of the National Basketball League of Canada. The regular season ran from November 15, 2018, to March 31, 2019. League changes The league originally intended to move the St. John's Edge to the Atlantic Division following the addition of the expansion Sudbury Five. However, after the NBL lost the Niagara River Lions and was back to four teams in Ontario, the league decided to play as a single table for the regular season schedule to ease the Edge's travel. The league still uses each team's overall record in a divisional table for playoff qualification as done in previous seasons. Dean Murray (born June 6, 1964) is an American professional basketball coach. He is the current head coach of REG of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). Playing career Murray played college basketball for Appalachian State Mountaineers men's basketball team from 1985 to 1987, in a total of seven games over two seasons. Coaching career Murray's professional coaching career started in 2001 with the Charleston Lowgators of the NBA D-League. Murray was the head coach of the Saitama Broncos in the Japanese Bj League in 2011. Murray coached Al-Muharraq SC in Bahrain in 2019. 2017–18 NBL Canada Season
The 2017–18 NBL Canada season is the seventh season of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBLC). The regular season ran November 18, 2017 to April 2, 2018. League changes After two years as league commissioner, Dave Magley left the league to found North American Premier Basketball. He was replaced on an interim basis by London Lightning owner and league president Vito Frijia. After years of league ownership, the Moncton Miracles were folded to make way for an expansion team under new ownership called the Moncton Magic. The league also awarded expansion franchises in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Sudbury, Ontario. However, the Sudbury ownership group delayed their launch in the league until 2019. The Orangeville A's folded in the Central Division, leaving the league with six teams in the Atlantic region and four in the Central. Rob Spon
Robert Spon is an American professional basketball coach, most recently serving as the head coach for the Cape Breton Highlanders of the National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada). He has previously led the Rochester RazorSharks, the Halifax Rainmen, Saint John Mill Rats/Riptide, and several other minor league teams in the past. Spon also has experience coaching the Dakota Wizards, Indiana Alleycats, and Pittsburgh Xplosion in the Continental Basketball Association. Coaching career In 2015, Spon led the Rochester RazorSharks to an undefeated season and a Premier Basketball League championship. Following the season, on May 7, he was named head coach of the Saint John Mill Rats, where he had previously served. The Mill Rats' ownership changed in 2016 but retained Spon as coach.
