It was created in 1978 out of areas which were formerly included in the Cape Breton North, Cape Breton South, and Cape Breton West. Nova Scotia Liberal Party
The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. The party currently forms the Official Opposition in Nova Scotia, under the leadership of Zach Churchill. The party was in power most recently from the 2013 election until the 2021 election. Origins The party is descended from the pre-Confederation Reformers in Nova Scotia who coalesced around Joseph Howe demanding the institution of responsible government. The Liberals (Reformers) formed several governments in the colony between 1848 and 1867. The party split during the debate on Confederation, with Howe and most other Liberals forming an Anti-Confederation Party, while supporters of confederation joined Tory Charles Tupper's Confederation Party. Ossie Fraser
Osborne 'Ossie' McKenzie Fraser, (November 7, 1923 – October 29, 1982) was a politician in Nova Scotia, Canada. Born in Edwardsville, he was the son of Ernest Osborne and Mary Catherine Fraser. Fraser worked as a steel worker with Sydney Steel Corporation (SYSCO) for 35 years. He was elected to the Cape Breton County Council in 1964 before moving into provincial politics. He was first elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in a 1976 byelection in the Cape Breton West riding. He was re-elected in the new riding of Cape Breton The Lakes in the 1978 and 1981 provincial elections. John Newell (Canadian Politician)
John Ainslie Newell (born October 6, 1935) is a Canadian former politician. He represented the electoral district of Cape Breton The Lakes in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1983 to 1988. He was a Progressive Conservative. Born in 1935 at Sydney, Nova Scotia, Newell served on Cape Breton County Council from 1976 to 1982. He first attempted to enter provincial politics in the 1981 election, but was defeated by Liberal Ossie Fraser by 120 votes. Fraser died in October 1982, and Newell was elected the new MLA for the riding in a byelection on February 22, 1983. Bernie Boudreau
James Bernard Boudreau (born July 25, 1944) is a Canadian lawyer and politician. Provincial politics Boudreau was elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from Cape Breton The Lakes in the 1988 provincial election. He was re-elected in 1993, and was appointed to the Executive Council of Nova Scotia as Minister of Finance in the Liberal government of John Savage. From 1996, he served as Minister of Health. When Savage resigned in 1997, Boudreau entered the leadership race to succeed him, but was defeated by Russell MacLellan, prompting Boudreau to leave provincial politics. Federal politics In October 1999, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien recommended Boudreau for appointment to the Senate of Canada, and to the Cabinet as Leader of the Government in the Senate, replacing Alasdair Graham who had been Nova Scotia's representative in the government since June 1997. Nova Scotia New Democratic Party
The Nova Scotia New Democratic Party is a social-democratic, progressive provincial party in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the provincial entity of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP). It was founded as the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1932, and became the New Democratic Party in 1961. It became the governing party of Nova Scotia following the 2009 Nova Scotia election, winning 31 seats in the Legislature, under the leadership of Premier Darrell Dexter. It is the first New Democratic Party in Atlantic Canada to form a government, and the second to form a government in a province east of Manitoba. The party lost government at the 2013 election, losing 24 seats, including Dexter's seat. Helen MacDonald is a Canadian politician. She represented the electoral district of Cape Breton The Lakes in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1997 to 1999. Cape Breton West
Cape Breton East (formerly Sydney River-Mira-Louisbourg) is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. The riding is represented by Brian Comer of the Progressive Conservative Party. In 1925, the County of Cape Breton and neighbouring Richmond County were divided into three distinct electoral districts, one of which was named Richmond-West Cape Breton. In 1933, on the recommendations of the 1932 Electoral Boundaries Commission, Richmond-West Cape Breton was dissolved and two new districts were created, one of which was Cape Breton West, which also took in parts of Cape Breton Centre and Cape Breton East.
