Capades
Capades (foaled 1986 in New York) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse whom the July 24, 1989 edition of ''The New York Times'' called "one of the country's most accomplished 3-year-old grass fillies." Capades was sired by Overskate, a Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame inductee who won an unprecedented nine Sovereign Awards while racing in Canada and the United States. Capades dam was the racing mare, Medal of Valor, a daughter of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Damascus. Trained from a base in New York by Richard O'Connell, at age two Capades won the Selima Stakes at Maryland's Laurel Park Racecourse. At age three, Capades won important races for fillies but showed how good she really was in her first start against colts at Pimlico Race Course. The only filly in a field of eight three-year-olds, Capades won the 1989 Broad Brush Stakes by five and a half lengths. Athenia Handicap
The Athenia Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares age three-years-old and older run over at a distance of a mile and an eighth on the turf held annually in October at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The event offers a purse of $175,000. History The Athenia Stakes is named in honor of Hal Price Headley's filly Athenia, who won in 1946 the Ladies Handicap over the distance of miles as well as the Misty Isle Handicap and Artful Handicap at Washington Park Race Track in Chicago. Lake Placid Stakes
The Lake Placid Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old fillies over a distance of one and one-eighths miles on the turf course scheduled annually in late July or early August at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. The event currently carries a purse of $200,000. History The event was inaugurated on 20 August 1984 as the Nijana Stakes and was won by the Edward P. Evans owned Possible Mate as part of an entry with Miss Audimar leading throughout the race to win by 2 lengths in a time of 1:50 flat. The event was named after the broodmare Nijana, who as a two-year-old won the Grade III Schuylerville Stakes in 1975 at Saratoga. The Matchmaker Stakes is a Graded stakes race, Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for Filly, fillies and mares age three and older run over a distance of miles on the turf held annually in July at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. New York Stakes
The New York Stakes is a Grade I American thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares aged four-years-old and older run over a distance of one and one-quarter miles on the turf scheduled annually in early June at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The current purse is $750,000. History Prior to 1962 the race was open to horses of either sex. For 1972 only, it was restricted to three-year-old fillies. Inaugurated in 1940 as the New York Handicap at Aqueduct Racetrack, it was moved to Belmont Park in 1961 but returned to Aqueduct in 1963 where it remained until 1975 when it was shifted permanently to Belmont Park. Richard O'Connell (racehorse Trainer)
Richard O'Connell (December 14, 1949 – February 28, 2004) was an American Thoroughbred horse racing trainer who was voted Trainer of the Year three times by New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB). A native of Brooklyn, New York, Richard O'Connell most notably trained the filly Capades plus the colt Thunder Rumble who in 1992 became the first New York-bred horse in one hundred and twenty-five years to win the prestigious Travers Stakes and for whom the New York Stallion Series The New York Stallion Series was created by the New York Thoroughbred Breeders', Inc. Selima Stakes
The Selima Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Laurel Park Racecourse in Laurel, Maryland. Raced in late November, it is open to two-year-old fillies and is raced on turf. History Inaugurated in 1926, it is named for Selima, who was imported to Maryland in 1750 and became a foundation mare by Benjamin Tasker Jr. at the Belair Stud Farm in Prince George County. Selima was the daughter of the Godolphin Arabian, she was considered "queen of the turf", she also gained fame as one of the country's greatest broodmares in American history. Referring to the 1959 Selima Stakes, in his book '' Legacies of the Turf'', author Edward L. Bowen says that it was "then one of the most important autumn races for juvenile fillies." National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame
The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame was founded in 1950 in Saratoga Springs, New York, to honor the achievements of American Thoroughbred race horses, jockeys, and trainers. In 1955, the museum moved to its current location on Union Avenue near Saratoga Race Course, at which time inductions into the hall of fame began. Each spring, following the tabulation of the final votes, the announcement of new inductees is made, usually during Kentucky Derby Week in early May. The actual inductions are held in mid-August during the Saratoga race meeting. The Hall of Fame's nominating committee selects eight to ten candidates from among the four Contemporary categories (male horse, female horse, jockey and trainer) to be presented to the voters. Laurel Park Racecourse
Laurel Park, formerly Laurel Race Course, is an American thoroughbred racetrack located just outside Laurel, Maryland which opened in 1911. The track is miles in circumference. Its name was changed to "Laurel Race Course" for several decades until returning to the "Laurel Park" designation in 1994. History Laurel Park Racecourse opened October 2, 1911 under the direction of the Laurel Four County Fair. In 1914, New York businessmen and prominent horsemen, Philip J. Dwyer and James Butler purchased the track and appointed Matt Winn as the general manager. In 1918 the field was used by Army Engineers as a training camp before deployment to France. In 1946, a stable fire broke out with 60 horses saved.
