The VRC Champions Mile, registered as the ''Cantala Stakes'', is a Group 1 Victoria Racing Club quality handicap Thoroughbred horse race run over 1,600 metres at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia on the fourth and last day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Total prize money is A$3,000,000 History The race was moved in 2016 to the first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival (Victoria Derby Day) from the last day. This was swapped with the LKS Mackinnon Stakes, which is now the feature race on the last day of the carnival. Taj Rossi
Taj Rossi (foaled 1970) was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse. Background Taj Rossi was sired by Matrice from the mare Dark Queen. He was trained throughout his career by Bart Cummings who bought him at the 1972 Adelaide yearling sales. Racing career During the Spring of 1973 as a three-year-old his career blossomed winning the Ascot Vale Stakes, Carrum Handicap, Moonee Valley Stakes, Cox Plate, Victoria Derby and the Sandown Guineas. This string of victories earned Taj Rossi the title of Australian Racehorse of the Year in 1973. A virus had troubled the horse throughout his career which eventuated in his retirement from the racetrack at the age of four. VRC Stakes Day
__NOTOC__ The VRC Stakes day (also known as the Seppelt Wines Stakes Day), is the final day of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival at Flemington Racecourse. Stakes Day is held on the Saturday directly following Melbourne Cup Day (the first Tuesday in November). The 'Stakes' were first run in 1881 as the Coburg Stakes. In 2016 the LKS Mackinnon Stakes was moved from the VRC Victoria Derby day and renamed to the Emirate Stakes. The original "Stakes" were in turn moved to the first day of the carnival and renamed as the Longines Mile. Stakes Day is also known as Family Day of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, with extra events aimed at children and families scheduled throughout the day. The Spring Racing Carnival is the name of an Australian Thoroughbred horse racing series held annually in Melbourne during October and November. Violoncello (horse)
Violoncello was a notable Australian Thoroughbred race horse. Bred in England where he had raced six times for three wins, he was purchased as a seven-year-old for 4,000 guineas by Sir Samuel Hordern and sent to Australia. Grandsire Laveno (GB) won the 1895 Great Britain Champion Stakes and Jockey Club Stakes. His half-brother, Quinologist had won the 1916 AJC The Metropolitan (ATC), Metropolitan Handicap which influenced Hordern to purchase him. Violoncello won the 1921 Caulfield Cup and the inaugural running of the Cox Plate in 1922. Amounis
Amounis was an Australian Thoroughbred Hall of Fame racehorse. He won 33 races over distances ranging from 6 to 12 furlongs (1,200 to 2,400 metres). Of these wins, 27 were in "Principal Races" (equivalent to today's Group races or "Black Type" races), 16 of these races have since been promoted to Group One (G1) status. In winning the AJC Epsom Handicap he established a new Australasian record time. Breeding He was a brown gelding bred by Percy Miller and foaled in 1922 at his Kia Ora Stud, Scone, New South Wales. The Barrier Miner
''The Barrier Miner'' was a daily broadsheet newspaper published in Broken Hill in far western New South Wales from 1888 to 1974. History First published on 28 February 1888, ''The Barrier Miner'' was published continuously until 25 November 1974. Copies are available on microfilm and online via Trove Digitised Newspapers. The paper was revived briefly in 2005; an index to births deaths and marriages has been prepared which also notes additional publication dates between 16 December 2005 and 31 July 2008.
