Total prize money for the race is A$160,000. History Name The race is named after the name of the house Canonbury, which was built in 1911 by Harry Rickards near Darling Point in Sydney. After his death the house was sold to the Australian Jockey Club in 1919 and was used as a convalescent hospital for returned servicemen from World War I. The race was originally held earlier in the racing season as an open two-year-old event but was moved for the 2007–2008 season to February as a colts and geldings event. Since 2008, the two-year-old fillies event, the Widden Stakes is held on the same racecard. Tulloch (horse)
Tulloch (foaled in New Zealand in 1954 and died in 1969) was a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who was one of the greatest Australian stayers. He won at distances from 5 furlongs (1,000 metres) to 2 miles (3,200 m), established Australian records at 10 furlongs (1960 Cox Plate) and 12 furlongs (1957 Caulfield Cup), and took 2 seconds off Phar Lap's 28-year-old record for the AJC Derby. As a three-year-old Tulloch won 14 of his 16 starts before he was struck down by a virus which kept him off the racing scene for almost two years. He returned to racing as an autumn five-year-old and won 15 of his last 24 races. Tulloch was one of the five inaugural horse inductees into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, alongside Carbine, Phar Lap, Bernborough and Kingston Town. Shogun Lodge
Shogun Lodge (25 September 1996 – 8 November 2003) was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse by American sire Grand Lodge. Shogun Lodge won three Group One races, and remarkably ran 2nd in a further 12 Group 1 races. On 8 November 2003, Shogun Lodge collapsed and died while competing in the Emirates Stakes. It was later revealed he died of a heart attack after suffering a lung haemorrhage during the race. Racing career Shogun Lodge made a winning debut in the Listed Canonbury Stakes at Randwick on 3 October 1998, and won three of his four starts prior to the Golden Slipper, in which he started favourite and finished a close third. Warwick Farm Racecourse
Warwick Farm Racecourse is a racecourse at Warwick Farm, a south-west suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is used as a racecourse for Thoroughbred horse racing. The racecourse is owned and operated by the Australian Turf Club. History In the early 1880s William Alexander Long bought J.H. Stroud's Warwick Park grant north of Liverpool. By 1884 he had also developed his property across the river, Chipping Norton, building stables and tracks. Long lived at Chipping Norton until 1901 when the banks foreclosed on him. His most successful horse Grand Flaneur won the Melbourne Cup in 1880. He sold the Warwick Park estate in 1882 to William Forrester, who changed the name to Warwick Farm to match his initials. He became one of the most successful trainers of his time and in 1889 he and Edwin Oatley were the principals in the formation of the Warwick Farm Racing Club. Rosehill Gardens Racecourse
The Rosehill Gardens Racecourse is located in the Western Sydney suburb of Rosehill, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is operated by the Australian Turf Club. Rosehill holds horse races for thoroughbred gallopers on a grass surface. It is one of the two premier racecourses in Sydney, the other one being Randwick Racecourse. Sebring (23 September 2005 – 23 February 2019) was a top class two-year-old Australian Thoroughbred racehorse, that won five of his six race starts. After winning the AJC Breeders' Plate in his spring debut, he had wins in the Golden Slipper and AJC Sires Produce Stakes and second place, defeated by a nose, in the AJC Champagne Stakes.
