Canoeing At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's Slalom C-1
The men's C-1 slalom canoeing event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 25 and 26 July 2021 at the Kasai Canoe Slalom Course. 18 canoeists from 18 nations competed. Background This was the 9th appearance of the event, having previously appeared in every Summer Olympics with slalom canoeing: 1972 and 1992–2016. Neither reigning Olympic champion Denis Gargaud Chanut nor reigning World Champion Cédric Joly competed; both were passed over in selection for the French team in favor of Martin Thomas. Qualification A National Olympic Committee (NOC) entered only 1 qualified canoeist in the men's slalom C-1 event. The Kasai Canoe Slalom Centre is a whitewater paddling venue, constructed to host the canoeing slalom events for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. It is first artificial slalom course in Japan. ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships
The ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships are an international event in canoeing organized by the International Canoe Federation. The World Championships have taken place every year in non- Summer Olympic years since 2002. From 1949 to 1999, they had taken place in odd-numbered years. The 2001 championships were scheduled to take place in Ducktown, Tennessee (East of Chattanooga) from 20 to 23 September, but were canceled in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Men race in single kayaks (K1) and single canoes (C1) both individually and in teams. Women race in K1 both individually and in teams and since the 2010 championships also in C1 individually. A team event was scheduled for those championships, but it was canceled because of weather conditions. Vojtěch Heger
Vojtěch Heger (born 23 August 2000) is a Czech slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2016. Heger competes in the C1 class and in kayak slalom, having initially competed in C2 alongside his older brother Tomáš and later with Antonie Galušková. Heger began paddling with KVS Hradec Králové in 2005, following his mother and brother into the sport. He moved to Brandýs nad Labem in 2015 and then to Prague, home of the Prague-Troja Canoeing Centre. He is currently studying physical education at Charles University. He won a silver medal in the C1 team event at the 2021 World Championships in Bratislava alongside Lukáš Rohan and Václav Chaloupka, ending a seven year drought for the Czech Republic in C1M events at the World Championships. Matija Marinić
Matija Marinić (born 24 December 1990) is a Croatian slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2006. Matija competed in the C1 event at the 2020 Summer Olympics, finishing 11th. He is from Zagreb and is coached by 1992 Olympian Stjepan Perestegi. Personal life Matija married Tea Budimir, a physiotherapist, in 2016 and has a child named Marko. He is from Rijeka on the Kvarner Gulf and currently lives in Croatia's capital city, Zagreb. He completes most of his training on the Sava River in his home town but spends a significant proportion of his time at the Tacen Whitewater Course in nearby Ljubljana, making it somewhat of a home course for him and other Croatian slalom canoeists. Liam Jegou
Liam Jegou (; born 9 January 1996) is an Irish slalom canoeist who has competed at the international level since 2011. He is based in France but competes for Ireland. He competes in C1 individually and also competed in C2 with Cade Ryan from 2012 to 2014. Jegou was born in Brittany to an Irish mother and a Breton father. For the first two years of his life, he grew up in Switzerland, before moving to Ballyvaughan, County Clare for the next five years. At the age of seven, his family relocated to Huningue, France. He won a silver medal in the C1 team event at the 2020 European Championships in Prague. He has also won two medals at the ICF World Junior and U23 Canoe Slalom Championships, with one silver in the junior category (C1: 2014) and one bronze in the U23 category (C1: 2019). He earned his best senior world championship result, of 24th, at the 2018 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in Rio de Janeiro.
