Canne, Apulia
Cannae (now Canne della Battaglia, ) is an ancient village of the Apulia region of south east Italy. It is a ''frazione'' (civil parish) of the ''comune'' (municipality) of Barletta. Cannae was formerly a bishopric, and is presently (2022) a Latin Catholic titular see. Geography The commune of Cannae is situated near the river Aufidus (the modern Ofanto), on a hill on the right (i.e., south) bank, southwest of its mouth, and 9 km southwest of Barletta. History It is primarily known for the Battle of Cannae, in which the numerically superior Roman army suffered a disastrous defeat by Hannibal in 216 BC (see Punic Wars). There is a considerable controversy as to whether the battle took place on the right or the left bank of the river. In later times the place became a ''municipium'', and the remains of an unimportant Roman town still exist upon the hill known as ''Monte di Canne''. Kanne
Kanne (Limburgish: ''Kan'') is a village in the municipality of Riemst in the southeastern part of the Belgian province of Limburg. as of 2021, the village has 1,162 inhabitants of which a significant part have the Dutch nationality. Location Kanne is situated right on the border with the city of Maastricht in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is also on the border with the Walloon municipality of Visé. Kanne is situated in the valley of the river Geer (Dutch: ''Jeker'') between Cannerberg (part of the Hesbaye Plateau) in the west and Mount Saint Peter (Caestert Plateau) in the east. The village is also situated on the Albert Canal, at the western end of the canal's passage through Mount Saint Peter. History The name Kanne ("Cannes") was mentioned first in a document of 965. The Aron () is a long river in central France. It is a right tributary of the Loire, which it meets at Decize. It flows through the department of Nièvre. Course The source of the Aron is in the commune of Crux-la-Ville, about north-east of Nevers. It flows in a southerly direction, through the towns of Châtillon-en-Bazois and Cercy-la-Tour, and empties into the Loire at Decize. For much of its length, from Châtillon-en-Bazois to Decize, the river flows parallel to the Canal du Nivernais. Canne (weapon)
Canne de combat is a French combat sport. As weapon, it uses a ''canne'' or cane (a kind of walking-stick) designed for fighting. ''Canne de combat'' was standardized in the 1970s for sporting competition by Maurice Sarry. The ''canne'' is very light, made of chestnut wood and slightly tapered. A padded suit and a fencing mask are worn for protection. History The ''canne de combat'' or ''canne d'arme'' originated in France in the early 19th century as a self-defence discipline and was particularly used by the upper classes in large, unsafe cities such as Paris. Some classify it as a French martial art although its codification as a sport does not allow this name officially. John Canne
John Canne (d. 1667?) was an English Independent minister and printer. Life The London separatist congregation of John Hubbard, who had moved with them to Ireland around 1621, on Hubbard’s death came back to London and chose Canne as minister. After a year or two he went to Amsterdam, and there became the successor of Henry Ainsworth as pastor of the congregation of English independents there. Canne retained his position for seventeen years, preaching and writing, and working as a printer. In 1640 Canne visited England, and the Broadmead congregation of baptists having been formed he was called upon to preach to them. He preached both in church and on the green, and debated with Mr. Fowler, the father of Edward Fowler. Canne returned to Amsterdam in the same year. It is supposed that Canne remained at Amsterdam until 1647.
