By-elections * On 20 June 1987, Mick Veivers (National) was elected to succeed Doug Jennings (National), who had died on 9 April 1987, as the member for Southport. * On 16 April 1988, Trevor Perrett ( CEC) was elected to succeed former Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen (National), who had resigned on 1 December 1987, as the member for Barambah. 1989 Queensland State Election
The 1989 Queensland state election was held in the Australian state of Queensland on 2 December 1989 to elect the 89 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. This was the first election following the downfall of seven-term premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen at the end of 1987. The government was led by Premier and leader of the National Party, Russell Cooper; the opposition was led by Opposition Leader and leader of the Labor Party, Wayne Goss, while the Liberal Party was led by Angus Innes. The National government, which had been in power since the 1957 election and had governed in its own right since the dissolution of the state coalition at the 1983 election, was defeated; the election was a landslide win for the Labor Party, which gained 24 seats. Labor also won more than 50% of the primary vote. Until 2012, it was the worst defeat of a sitting government in Queensland history. First created for the 1912 state election, the district was based in inner Brisbane centred on the suburb of New Farm, covering areas that previously belonged to the district of Fortitude Valley. Merthyr was abolished by the 1991 redistribution, taking effect at the 1992 state election. Most of its territory was absorbed into the electorate of Brisbane Central with parts also added to the new district of Clayfield. Bill Lickiss
William Daniel Lickiss (31 July 1924 – 22 February 1993) was an Australian politician. Early life He was born in Sydney to William George Lickiss and Lillian Rita, ''née'' Green. He attended Clempton Park Public School and Canterbury Boys High School before the family moved to Brisbane. He studied at the University of Queensland and became a draftsman with the Queensland Survey Office and then the Department of Territories in Darwin. During World War II he served in the Royal Australian Air Force as a navigator and intelligence officer. Returning to Queensland, he farmed sugarcane and pineapples and joined the Liberal Party. Political career In 1963 he was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly as the member for Mount Coot-tha. Electoral District Of Rockhampton North
Rockhampton North was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1888 to 1912, and from 1960 to 1992. It was based on the northern area of Rockhampton. In both incarnations, it was replaced by the district of Keppel. Rockhampton North was generally a safe seat for the Labor Party. It was one of the eleven seats held by Labor in their "cricket team" caucus after the 1974 election, their worst defeat until 2012. Leslie John "Les" Yewdale (30 April 1928 – 1 January 1999) was an Australian politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Yewdale was born in Rockhampton to Arthur Edward Yewdale and Maude Anne, ''née'' Walsh. He attended state schools in Berserker and Rockhampton before graduating from Christian Brothers College. Working variously as a meatworker, station hand, tradesman's assistant, builder's labourer and waterside worker, he became secretary of the Rockhampton Trades and Labour Council in 1959, holding the position until 1972. David Underwood
David Francis Underwood (born 12 June 1951) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Pittsworth, the son of Frank Underwood. He attended state and Catholic schools in the Darling Downs region before becoming a forestry labourer, shed hand, bank clerk and ultimately schoolteacher. In 1977 he was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Ipswich West. In 1981 he was appointed Opposition Health Spokesman, moving to Tourism, National Parks, Sport and the Arts in 1983, to Education and the Arts in 1986, and to Transport in 1987. He stepped down from the front bench in 1988 and retired from politics in 1989. In 1991 he was tried for assault, but he was acquitted.
