This is a list of candidates for the 2017 Western Australian state election. The election was held on 11 March 2017. Redistribution and seat changes *A redistribution was completed in 2015. 2017 Western Australian State Election
The 2017 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 11 March 2017 to elect members to the Parliament of Western Australia, including all 59 seats in the Legislative Assembly and all 36 seats in the Legislative Council. The eight-and-a-half-year two-term incumbent Liberal– WA National government, led by Premier Colin Barnett, was defeated in a landslide by the Labor opposition, led by Opposition Leader Mark McGowan. Labor won 41 of the 59 seats in the Legislative Assembly—a 12-seat majority. This was WA Labor's strongest performance in a state election at the time, and formed the largest majority government and seat tally in Western Australian parliamentary history until that point. Christopher John Tallentire (born 11 October 1963) is an Australian politician. He has been a Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly since the 2008 state election, representing Gosnells until 2017 and Thornlie thereafter. Kim Hames
Kim Desmond Hames (born 24 March 1953) is an Australian politician who was a Liberal Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1993 to 2001 and from 2005 to 2017. He served as a minister in the governments of Richard Court and Colin Barnett, and was deputy premier to Barnett from 2008 to 2016. Hames retired from parliament at the 2017 state election. Early life Hames was born in Perth to Eunice (née Jackson) and Reginald Hames. He attended Guildford Grammar School before going on to the University of Western Australia to study medicine. After graduation, he worked as a general practitioner, which had also been his father's profession. Electoral District Of Bunbury
Bunbury is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. The district, taking in the city of Bunbury has existed continuously since 1890, being one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 general election. From 1974 to 2005 the seat was always held by the party of government, making it an effective bellwether. Two early Premiers of Western Australia, Sir John Forrest and Sir Newton Moore, held Bunbury during their time in office. However, after Moore's retirement in 1911, another member for Bunbury was not appointed to a cabinet post until 2008, when John Castrilli became Minister for Local Government under Colin Barnett. John Castrilli
Giovanni Mario "John" Castrilli (; born 22 November 1950 in Roccamandolfi, Italy), was a Liberal member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly representing the electorate of Bunbury after winning the seat in the 2005 election. He retired in 2017. Early life Castrilli's father, Antonio, arrived in Australia in 1952 after migrating from Roccamandolfi in Italy, he was joined by the rest of his family in 1954. Political career Starting his career in local politics in 1991, Castrilli served as a councillor of the City of Bunbury from 1991 to 1997. Castrilli was then elected as Mayor of Bunbury in 1997 and re-elected in 2001 with a two-party vote of 73.5%. Contesting the seat of Bunbury for the first time in the 2005 election Castrilli beat the sitting Labor member with a swing of +0.6 points and winning the seat by 0.4 points. Peter Argyris Katsambanis (born 24 December 1965) is a former Australian politician. He was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Council at the 2013 state election, representing the Liberal Party, taking his seat on 22 May 2013. He resigned in 2017 to successfully contest the Legislative Assembly seat of Hillarys. At the 2021 Western Australian state election, he was defeated by Labor's Caitlin Collins. He was previously a Liberal member of the Victorian Legislative Council, from 1996 to 2002. Geraldton is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. Geraldton was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 colonial election. The district is based on the eponymous regional city. Labor held throughout most of the twentieth century, Geraldton has since become a seat that has changed hands regularly in the last two decades. Geography The district has always been based on the regional coastal city of Geraldton.
