The 1979 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 5 May 1979, was for the 48th Parliament of Victoria. Electoral District Of Dandenong
The electoral district of Dandenong is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was first proclaimed in 1904 when the district of Dandenong and Berwick was abolished. The district is located within the outskirts of Melbourne's south-east, containing both residential and industrial areas, as well as the Armada Dandenong Plaza and Churchill National Park. A very multicultural district, it has been a safe Labor seat since the 1970s. Dandenong District comprises the suburbs of Dandenong, Doveton, Eumemmerring and parts of Dandenong North, Dandenong South, Endeavour Hills, Noble Park, Noble Park North and Rowville. Bill Stephen (politician)
William Francis Stephen (23 July 1921 – 5 April 2013) was an Australian politician. He was born in Fremantle in Western Australia to blacksmith William Stephen and Vera May Pyke. He attended local state schools and became a timber worker and locomotive engineman before serving in the Royal Australian Air Force from 1942 to 1946. He was a traffic officer from 1946 to 1947 and a dairy farmer in 1948 before moving to Pakenham, where he was the foreman at a food factory from 1950 to 1952. In 1953 he was granted land at Meredith as a soldier settler, and he became a small seeds producer. He was active in the local Primary Producers' Union and in the local Liberal Party. In 1964 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Ballarat South. From 1973 he was Temporary Chairman of Committees, a position he held until his retirement in 1979. Joe Rafferty (politician)
Joseph Anstice Rafferty (10 January 1911 – 14 June 2000) was an Australian politician. He was born in Launceston in Tasmania, the son of schoolteacher Col. R. A. Rafferty and Sarah Rose Anne Plummer. He was educated locally at both state and private schools and entered the public service in 1930. On 8 June 1940 he married Miriam Kathleen Richards, with whom he had two sons. He studied at the University of Tasmania, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1941. He had moved to Melbourne in 1940, where he studied law at the University of Melbourne. From 1945 he was personnel manager for Australian National Airways. Ian Francis McLaren (30 March 1912 – 17 April 2000), M.A., Dip. Com., D. Litt., , F.R.H.S.V., was an Australian politician, accountant, businessman, historian, bibliographer and book-collector. Early life He was born at Launceston in Tasmania to draper Alexander Morrison McLaren and Elsie Elizabeth Gibbins. He attended Caulfield Grammar School and the University of Melbourne, becoming an accountant. In 1938 he embarked on a world tour, returning in 1939. He served in the Royal Australian Navy, from 1942 to 1945, and attained the rank of Lieutenant. After the war he returned to Melbourne where he become a partner in the accountancy firm Harris & McLaren. On 16 April 1941 he married Eileen Porter, with whom he had four children. Prahran is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. It was created by the Electoral Act Amendment Act 1888, taking effect at the 1889 elections. The electorate is the state’s smallest by area, covering a little under 11 km² in the inner south-east of Melbourne. It includes the suburbs of South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor, as well as parts of Balaclava, St Kilda, St Kilda East and Toorak (west of Orrong Rd). Prahran has tended to be a marginal seat throughout its existence, repeatedly changing between the Labor Party and its successive conservative rivals. It has not, however, been a bellwether seat, as the changes of party control have often not coincided with changes of government. Sam Loxton
Samuel John Everett Loxton (29 March 19213 December 2011) was an Australian cricketer, footballer and politician. Among these three pursuits, his greatest achievements were attained on the cricket field; he played in 12 Tests for Australia from 1948 to 1951. A right-handed all-rounder, Loxton was part of Don Bradman's ''Invincibles'', who went through the 1948 tour of England undefeated, an unprecedented achievement that has never been matched. As well as being a hard-hitting middle-order batsman, Loxton was a right-arm fast-medium swing bowler who liked to aim at the upper bodies of the opposition, and an outfielder with an accurate and powerful throw. After being dropped from the national team, Loxton represented Victoria for seven more seasons before retiring from first-class cricket. It has existed in two incarnations, first from 1976 to 2002, and was created again in the 2013 redistribution and came into effect at the 2014 state election. Neville Hudson
Neville Read Hudson (10 October 1923 – 29 July 1980) was an Australian politician. Early life and family Neville Hudson was born in Brighton to accountant William Read Hudson and Nellie Frances Marion Downe. He attended Brighton Grammar School, and from 1941 to 1945 was a heavy bomber pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross. From 1945 to 1947 he worked with the CSIRO, and from 1948 ran a dry cleaning business in Werribee. On 19 December 1947 he married Valda Ellis, with whom he had three sons. He had a farm at Bega from 1964 to 1970, after which he returned to Werribee. Political career A member of the Liberal Party, he was a Werribee Shire Councillor from 1961 to 1964 and from 1971 to 1978, serving as president from 1975 to 1976.
