1943 Victorian State Election
The 1943 Victorian state election was held in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday 12 June 1943 to elect 65 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. Background Country Party unity At the time of the election, the Country Party was in the process of repairing a split which had taken place in December 1937 after federal MP John McEwen was expelled from the state branch of the party. The splinter group which supported McEwen had formed the Liberal Country Party on 30 March 1938, which contested the 1940 state election as a separate party. By April 1943, the United Country Party and the Liberal Country Party had formed a joint executive, which had unanimously agreed to reunite the parties. Members of the LCP at the time of the election were endorsed and counted as Victorian Country Party candidates separately from the United Country Party, but the unity agreements meant that their seats were counted for Dunstan's UCP. Electoral District Of Brunswick
The electoral district of Brunswick is an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It covers an area of in inner northern Melbourne, and includes the suburbs of Brunswick, Brunswick East, Carlton North, Fitzroy North, Princes Hill and parts of Brunswick West. It lies within the Northern Metropolitan Region of the upper house, the Legislative Council. Historically a very safe seat for the Labor Party, Brunswick has in recent elections seen an increase in support for the Greens, who won the seat at the 2018 election. The seat has had three periods of existence. The seat was first formed in 1904 and abolished in 1955, recreated in 1976 and abolished again in 1992, and again re-established in 2002. Ian Macfarlan
Ian Macfarlan (born John Robert Macfarlan; 21 November 1881 – 19 March 1964) was the Deputy Leader of the Australian Liberal Party in the Australian state of Victoria during 1945. He was briefly commissioned as the 35th Premier of Victoria by the Governor and formed a government which brought about the end of the Dunstan Ministry. MacFarlan was the Member for Brighton from 1928 until 1945 and was Attorney-General and Solicitor-General on 3 occasions, from 26 November 1928 until 11 December 1929 in the government of William McPherson, from 25 July 1934 until 1 April 1935 in the government of Stanley Argyle and from 8 September 1943 until 20 November 1945 in the government of Albert Dunstan. MacFarlan was a member for the Nationalist Party, which later became the United Australia Party (UAP) in 1931. Trevor Oldham
Trevor Donald Oldham (10 March 1900 – 2 May 1953) was an Australian politician, who was the leader of the Liberal Party in the state of Victoria from 1952 until his death in 1953. The eldest of three sons born to Arthur and Ethel Oldham, he was educated at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School and the University of Melbourne. He had enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 7 November 1918, four days before the Armistice. He married Kathleen Cooch in 1929. Business career Oldham graduated in law at Melbourne University in 1921, and practised as a solicitor until the weight of parliamentary duties limited his time. He was a past president of the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital and a former deputy chancellor of Melbourne University. Arthur Cook (Australian Politician)
Arthur Ernest Cook (6 September 1883 – 10 April 1945) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sandhurst to engine driver Robert Cook and Mary Daley. He attended state school before becoming a hairdresser, owning his own business in Bendigo from around 1901. On 28 April 1909 he married Mary Victoria Rocke, with whom he had four children. He served as vice-president of the Bendigo Trades Hall Council and was on the Labor Party's state executive from 1916 to 1918. In 1924 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Bendigo West, transferring to Bendigo in 1927. Roy Paton
James Roy Paton (23 November 1882 – 25 April 1947) was an Australian politician. He was born in Yabba, Victoria to grazier Archibald Paton and Ruth McMeekin. He attended Brighton Grammar School and then worked on the family property. On 30 April 1923 he married Isobel Mary McMeekin, with whom he had two children. He then moved to farm at Tallangatta, and from 1923 to 1947 served on Towong Shire Council, with two terms as president from 1929 to 1930 and from 1932 to 1933. Frederick Albert Cook, known by his second name Albert, (22 March 1883 – 23 December 1971) was an Australian politician. He was born at Baddaginnie to storekeeper Frederick John Cook and Maria Dosser. After a state education he carried on his father's stores in Baddaginnie and Benalla. On 26 December 1915 he married Neva Garland Mowatt, with whom he had five children; a second marriage on 20 April 1943 to Kathleen Flora Curry produced two further children. He served on Benalla Shire Council from 1924 to 1964 and was twice president (1931–32, 1953–54).
