Canada–Qatar Relations
Canada and Qatar enjoyed friendly relations and coordination on the international field, long before Qatar's Embassy opened in Ottawa in 2011, including their joint military collaboration during the Gulf War and in the international intervention in Libya. Diplomatic relations between the two nations were established in 1974. Canada Dry One
Canada Dry was the nickname for two Canadian Forces bases in Doha, Qatar during the first Gulf War. The two bases, named Canada Dry One (10 km outside Doha) and Canada Dry Two, housed land and air elements (CF18 - Desert Cats). Canada Dry is the name of a brand of ginger ale that originated in Canada. Units stationed at the base included: * 409 Nighthawks - CF-18 fighters * 416 Lynxes - CF-18 fighters * 439 Tigers - Tactical Fighter Squadron - CF-18 fighters * Mike Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment A number of CF-18 fighters were stationed in the bases and flew sorties for the coalition. Helen Chapin Metz (April 12, 1928 – May 13, 2011) was an American editor and Middle East analyst. Life Helen Chapin was born on April 12, 1928, in Peking, China. She was the daughter of diplomat Selden Chapin and Mary Paul Noyes. Her brother, Frederic L. Chapin, would also become a diplomat. She was educated at the Potomac School, the Madeira School, Vassar College, graduating in 1949, and the American University of Beirut. She married Rev. Combat air patrol (CAP) is a type of flying mission for fighter aircraft. A combat air patrol is an aircraft patrol provided over an objective area, over the force protected, over the critical area of a combat zone, or over an air defense area, for the purpose of intercepting and destroying hostile aircraft before they reach their target.
