Canada At The 2018 Winter Paralympics
Canada competed at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, from 9 to 18 March 2018. Canada sent a team of 55 athletes to compete in all six sports. The chef de mission was retired sledge hockey player Todd Nicholson, appointed in January 2017. Canada finished the Games with eight gold medals and 28 overall (ranking 3rd and 2nd, respectively). It was the most successful Canadian performance in terms of total medals, surpassing the 19 won at the 2010 Winter Paralympics. This also met the goal set by the Canadian Paralympic Committee to improve on the 16 medals won at the 2014 Winter Paralympics. Opening ceremony flag-bearer Brian McKeever became Canada's most decorated Winter Paralympian after winning his 14th career medal at the Games, surpassing the previous record by Lana Spreeman, who won 13 medals between 1980 and 1994. Cross-country skiing at the 2018 Winter Paralympics was held at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre, South Korea. The twenty events were held from 11 to 18 March 2018. Canadian Brian McKeever won three individual gold and a team relay bronze, his third triple gold medal performance, for a career total of 13 gold medals and 17 medals in all, making him the most decorated Paralympic cross-country skier ever. Events The program includes 20 events. The events are mostly divided into three classifications (sitting, standing and visually impaired). For each of these classifications, there are three men's events and three women's events. There are also two relay events which combine classifications. Standing skiers are those that have a locomotive disability but are able to use the same equipment as able-bodied skiers, whereas sitting competitors use a sitski. Jack Leitch (skier)
Jack Leitch (born 17 July 1995) is a Scottish footballer who plays for Stirling Albion. A midfielder, he started his career with Motherwell and was a product of the Motherwell Academy. In 2016, he moved to Airdrieonians and had one season with the ''Diamonds''. Leitch then played for Peterhead for three seasons before signing for Stirling Albion in 2020. Career Motherwell On 30 November 2013, Leitch made his debut for Motherwell as a substitute in a surprise 1–0 defeat against Lanarkshire derby opponents Albion Rovers in the Scottish Cup. His first start came on 1 March 2014, in a 4–1 win against Heart of Midlothian. On 4 June 2014, Leitch signed a new two-year contract at Motherwell. A sighted guide is a person who guides a person with blindness or vision impairment. Sports Paralympic Games At the Paralympic Games there are various classifications of athletes with a visual impairment. Rules are according to the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The sighted guides are such a close and essential part of the competition, that the athlete with a visual impairment and the guide are considered a team, and both athletes are medal candidates. Winter At the Winter Paralympics there are three classifications of athletes with a visual impairment: * B1 (no useful vision) * B2 (minimal useful vision) * B3 (some useful vision). The wheelchair curling competition of the 2018 Winter Paralympics was held from 10 to 17 March 2018 at the Gangneung Gymnasium in Gangneung, South Korea.
