Cross-country Skiing At The 2018 Winter Paralympics
Cross-country skiing at the 2018 Winter Paralympics was held at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre, South Korea. The twenty events were held from 11 to 18 March 2018. Canadian Brian McKeever won three individual gold and a team relay bronze, his third triple gold medal performance, for a career total of 13 gold medals and 17 medals in all, making him the most decorated Paralympic cross-country skier ever. Events The program includes 20 events. The events are mostly divided into three classifications (sitting, standing and visually impaired). For each of these classifications, there are three men's events and three women's events. There are also two relay events which combine classifications. Standing skiers are those that have a locomotive disability but are able to use the same equipment as able-bodied skiers, whereas sitting competitors use a sitski. Alpensia Biathlon Centre
Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Centre (알펜시아 크로스컨트리 경기장) and Alpensia Biathlon Centre (알펜시아 바이애슬론 경기장) are sport venues in the Alpensia resort, located in Daegwallyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, South Korea. They are used for cross-country skiing and biathlon respectively. Each grandstand of the two venues is contiguous and similar in appearance. They also adjoin the ski jumping hills. In the non-winter season, the venues are also used as golf courses named Alpensia 700. History The venues were first completed in December 1995. They were called several names, which roughly mean the Gangwon (Kangwon) provincial Nordic venue. They hosted the cross-country skiing and biathlon events at the 1999 Asian Winter Games. A sighted guide is a person who guides a person with blindness or vision impairment. Sports Paralympic Games At the Paralympic Games there are various classifications of athletes with a visual impairment. Rules are according to the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). The sighted guides are such a close and essential part of the competition, that the athlete with a visual impairment and the guide are considered a team, and both athletes are medal candidates. Winter At the Winter Paralympics there are three classifications of athletes with a visual impairment: * B1 (no useful vision) * B2 (minimal useful vision) * B3 (some useful vision). Carina Edlinger (born 1998) is an Austrian visually-impaired Paralympic cross-country skier. Natalie Wilkie
Natalie Wilkie (born January 21, 2001) is a Canadian Paralympic cross-country skier. As the youngest member of Team Canada at the 2018 Winter Paralympic Games, Wilkie won gold, silver, and bronze medals at the PyeongChang, South Korea games. Career Wilkie began training and competing in able-bodied cross-country skiing when she was 4 years old, growing up near the Larch Hills Cross Country Ski Area near Salmon Arm, BC, Canada. In June 2016, as a Grade 9 student at Salmon Arm Secondary School, Wilkie lost four fingers on her left hand in an accident involving a jointer during a school woodworking class. Marta Zaynullina (born 30 July 1990) is a Russian Paralympic cross-country skier and biathlete. She represented Russia at the 2014 Winter Paralympics which was held in her home nation and competed in the cross-country skiing and biathlon events. Andrea Eskau
Andrea Eskau (born 21 March 1971) is a German handbiker, Paralympic biathlon, and cross country skier who was born in Apolda and was a winner of three gold medals in Summer Paralympic games. In 2014, she became a recipient of another gold medal at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia. In 2013, she was a cross-country sit skiing winner at the IPC Nordic Skiing World Championship. Eskau also competed at the 2016 Paralympic games in Rio de Janeiro winning a gold medal in the H5 Cycling road race and taking home a bronze medal in the H4-5 time trial.
