Canada At The 1930 British Empire Games
Canada was host country for the 1930 British Empire Games, which were held at Hamilton, Ontario, and was one of only eleven countries to be represented at the inaugural Games. Melville Marks (Bobby) Robinson of Canada had been asked to organise the inaugural British Empire Games in 1928. At these first Games, Canada won 54 medals against England's 61. Newfoundland competed separately at the 1930 British Empire Games, but did not win any medals. Hamilton, Ontario
Hamilton is a port city in the Canadian province of Ontario. Hamilton has a population of 569,353, and its census metropolitan area, which includes Burlington and Grimsby, has a population of 785,184. The city is approximately southwest of Toronto in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Conceived by George Hamilton when he purchased the Durand farm shortly after the War of 1812, the town of Hamilton became the centre of a densely populated and industrialized region at the west end of Lake Ontario known as the Golden Horseshoe. On January 1, 2001, the current boundaries of Hamilton were created through the amalgamation of the original city with other municipalities of the Regional Municipality of Hamilton–Wentworth. Canada has participated in every Commonwealth Games since the first ever British Empire Games held in Hamilton, Ontario in 1930, one of only six countries to have done so. The others are Australia, England, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales. History Newfoundland competed separately at the 1930 and 1934 Games (although not winning any medals), but since 1950 has competed as part of Canada. The Canadian team won 54 medals in the first (1930) Games, and 51 gold medals at Edinburgh (1986). Canada's biggest total medal tally was 129 medals in Victoria (1994). Canada came third in the medal count at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne after Australia and England, and is third on the all-time medal tally of Commonwealth Games, with an overall total of 1318 medals (413 Gold, 443 Silver and 462 Bronze). At the 1930 British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, there were two aquatics disciplines – swimming and diving. There were four diving events contested and eleven swimming events. The aquatics programme included the only women's events of the games. These events were held at the Municipal Pool (now the Jimmy Thompson Memorial Pool), which was built specifically for these games. Silas McLellan
Silas Dennison McLellan, (17 March 1897 – 10 February 1974) was a Canadian marathon runner. He won the Halifax Marathon five times as well as competing in the Boston marathon, the 1928 Summer Olympics and the British Empire Games. Military Service Silas was drafted on the 11th of June 1918 at Camp Aldershot. He joined the 1st Depot Battalion Nova Scotia Regiment. He arrived in Liverpool on the 16th of August 1918 with the 17th reserve battalion. He remained in the United Kingdom until June 1919 when he returned to Canada and was discharged on the 5th of July 1919 in Halifax, Nova Scotia Halifax is the capital and largest municipality of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, and the largest municipality in Atlantic Canada.
