Can Xue
Deng Xiaohua (; born May 30, 1953), better known by her pen name Can Xue (), is a Chinese avant-garde fiction writer and literary critic. Her family was severely persecuted following her father being labeled a rightist in the Anti-Rightist Campaign of 1957. Her writing, which consists mostly of short fiction, breaks with the realism of earlier modern Chinese writers. She has also written novels, novellas, and literary criticisms of the work of Dante, Jorge Luis Borges, and Franz Kafka. Can Xue has been described as "China’s most prominent author of experimental fiction", "Critics focusing on Can Xue are often scholars or translators of Chinese literature; they assure us that she is “peerless” as a writer of experimental literature in China" and some of her fiction has been translated and published in English. International Booker Prize
The International Booker Prize (formerly known as the Man Booker International Prize) is an international literary award hosted in the United Kingdom. The introduction of the International Prize to complement the Man Booker Prize was announced in June 2004. Sponsored by the Man Group, from 2005 until 2015 the award was given every two years to a living author of any nationality for a body of work published in English or generally available in English translation. Best Translated Book Award
The Best Translated Book Award is an American literary award that recognizes the previous year's best original translation into English, one book of poetry and one of fiction. It was inaugurated in 2008 and is conferred by Three Percent, the online literary magazine of Open Letter Books, which is the book translation press of the University of Rochester. A long list and short list are announced leading up to the award. The award takes into consideration not only the quality of the translation but the entire package: the work of the original writer, translator, editor, and publisher. The award is "an opportunity to honor and celebrate the translators, editors, publishers, and other literary supporters who help make literature from other cultures available to American readers." Natascha Bruce
Natascha Bruce is a British writer and translator of Chinese fiction and nonfiction. She currently resides in Amsterdam. Biography Bruce graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2010 with a Bachelor's degree in Chinese, focusing on contemporary Chinese literature. She began working as a translator in Taiwan, translating subtitles and screenplays into English. In 2015, she was a joint winner with Michael Day of the inaugural Bai Meigui Translation Prize for her translation of Dorothy Tse's short story ''Chicken'' (鸡). In 2016 she was a recipient of the American Literary Translators Association's Emerging Translator Mentorship for a Singaporean language. Since then, she has translated a number of works by writers including Xu Xiaobin, Ho Sok Fong, Can Xue, Patigül, Xie Ding, and Yeng Pway Ngon. ''Frontier'' is a novel by Chinese avant-garde writer Can Xue. Set primarily in a location known as Pebble Town, it follows the misadventures of a group of loosely related characters that seem to be wandering in and out of each other's dreams. Each character seems to have arrived in Pebble Town for a different reason, and many are connected to an organization known as the Design Institute. First published in China in 2008, Open Letter Books published an English translation by Karen Gernant and Chen Zeping in 2017.
