Campbell is a small town situated on the edge of the Ghaap Plateau in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is located 48 km east of Griquatown. It was originally known as ''Knovel Valley'' and then ''Groote Fontein'', but was renamed in honour of the Reverend John Campbell who visited the Cape Colony in 1813. Origin of the settlement The history of modern settlement of Campbell dates back to 1805 when a group of Griqua, including Captain Andries Waterboer, travelled with missionary Jan Matthys Kok from Klaarwater (now Griquatown) to the territory of the Tswana near the modern town of Kuruman. Campbell is the primary hamlet and a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Campbell in Steuben County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 713, out of 3,406 in the entire town of Campbell. The community is in eastern Steuben County, in the western part of the town of Campbell. It is on the northeast side of the Cohocton River, a southeast-flowing tributary of the Chemung River and part of the Susquehanna River watershed.
