Camp Lapwai
Camp Lapwai was a United States Army encampment in Washington Territory, present-day Idaho. It was established by Company E, 1st Regiment Washington Territory Volunteer Infantry. After being mustered in at Alcatraz at San Francisco, California, they were ordered on October 19, 1862, to Camp Lapwai near the Nez Perce Agency. Joined there at the beginning of November by Company "F", 1st Oregon Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, they built the encampment. Camp Lapwai was renamed Fort Lapwai in 1863; the new Idaho Territory was also established in 1863. North Central Idaho is an area which spans the central part of the state of Idaho and borders Oregon, Montana, and Washington. Lapwai, Idaho
Lapwai is a city in the northwest United States, in Nez Perce County, Idaho. Its population was 1,137 at the 2010 census, and it is the seat of government of the Nez Perce Indian Reservation. Lapwai actually means "The land of the butterflies" History The area that is today Lapwai was the home of Hin-ma-tute-ke-kaikt, also known as Big Thunder and later as James. It was here that Henry Spalding established a Protestant mission among the Nez Perce in 1836. This was also the general region that Bill Craig settled, since his wife was James' daughter.
