Camp Dudley Road Historic District
Camp Dudley Road Historic District is a national historic district located at Westport, in Essex County, New York. The district contains 131 contributing buildings, one contributing site, and one contributing structure. It consists of an agricultural landscape and includes late-19th and early-20th century seasonal developments. Among the buildings are vernacular farmhouses in a variety of styles, barn complexes, a stone schoolhouse built in 1816, Skenewood Estate, the Stable Inn properties, Germain property, "Kenjockety," and Barber's Point Lighthouse. Westport, New York
Westport is a town in Essex County, New York, United States overlooking Lake Champlain. The population was 1,312 at the 2010 census. The town is on the eastern border of the county and is south of Plattsburgh and south of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Westport is inside the Adirondack Park. Essex County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 37,381. Its county seat is the hamlet of Elizabethtown. Its name is from the English county of Essex. Barber's Point Light (New York)
Barber's Point Light is an inactive lighthouse on Lake Champlain in New York. History Barber's Point was the site of a ferry operated by Hezekiah Barber, who settled the point beginning in 1785. The Lighthouse Board requested construction of a light in 1868, but construction did not begin until 1872 due to problems acquiring title to the land. The Second Empire design used for the Colchester Reef Light The Colchester Reef Light in Vermont was a lighthouse off Colchester Point (northwest of Burlington, Vermont) in Lake Champlain. Founded in 1885 by Sumner F. Dudley, Camp Dudley is the oldest continually running boys camp in the United States. It is located in Westport, New York, on the shores of Lake Champlain. History and traditions Early history Sumner Dudley, long active in both the New York and New Jersey YMCA movements, was asked in 1884 to take "young honor YMCA members" camping. In 1885, he took seven boys for a week's encampment at Orange Lake, N. J. The next year Dudley moved the site to Twin Islands, Lake Wawayanda, N.J.
