Camanche () is a city in Clinton County, Iowa, United States, on the Mississippi River. The population was 4,570 at the time of the 2020 census. History A post office has been in operation in Camanche since 1837. The community was named after the Comanche Indian tribe. 1860 tornado On Sunday, June 3, 1860, a tornado struck Camanche. Few buildings were left standing, and all structures were badly damaged. The storm moved at 50 mph. The lack of an organized way to report weather events left people living along the Mississippi River vulnerable. A raft carrying 26 men was hit outside Camanche, and only three on board survived. The tornado killed a total of 92 people, including at least 41 in Camanche. The outbreak as a whole killed more than 140 people in just a few hours and injured over 300. Clinton County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 46,460. Its county seat is Clinton. Its name is in honor of the seventh Governor of New York State, DeWitt Clinton. Clinton County comprises the Clinton, IA Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Davenport–Moline–Rock Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Clinton County was formed on December 21, 1837. It was named for DeWitt Clinton, a Governor of New York and most ardent advocate for the construction of the Erie Canal. The cities of DeWitt and Clinton were also named after him. In 1835, Elijah Buell built a log cabin for himself and his family and was thus the first settler of the region. River Valley Conference (Iowa)
The River Valley Conference (RVC) is a high school athletic conference whose members are located in smaller communities in eastern Iowa. The conference roughly spans from Johnson County, Iowa to the southwest, to Dubuque County, Iowa to the northeast. The RVC was founded in the 2013-2014 school year. Member Schools There are 15 full members of the River Valley Conference. Most of those schools are in Class 2A, Iowa's second smallest enrollment class. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is the regulating body for male Iowa high school interscholastic athletics and is a full member of the National Federation of State High School Associations.
