Calvert Hills Station
Calvert Hills Station is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated about south of Borroloola and east of Elliott. Other pastoral leases surround the property including Wollogorang Station to the east, Pungalina-Seven Emu Sanctuary and the Garawa Aboriginal Land Trust to the north, Kiana to the west, Cresswell Downs to the south west and Benmarra and the Wanyi-Garawa Aboriginal Land Trust to the south. Alex Chapple, an American, acquired the property prior to 1996. He employed Paul Edmonds as manager who convinced him to hold onto the station. The property was mostly under developed at this stage and had also been destocked to eradicate brucellosis and tuberculosis. A pastoral lease, sometimes called a pastoral run, is an arrangement used in both Australia and New Zealand where government-owned Crown land is leased out to graziers for the purpose of livestock grazing on rangelands. Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease usually caused by '' Mycobacterium tuberculosis'' (MTB) bacteria. Tuberculosis generally affects the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body. Brucellosis is a highly contagious zoonosis caused by ingestion of unpasteurized milk or undercooked meat from infected animals, or close contact with their secretions. It is also known as undulant fever, Malta fever, and Mediterranean fever. The bacteria causing this disease, ''Brucella'', are small, Gram-negative, nonmotile, nonspore-forming, rod-shaped ( coccobacilli) bacteria. Cresswell Downs Station, often referred to as Cresswell Downs, is a pastoral lease that operates as a cattle station in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated about east of Elliott and south of Borroloola. Cresswell Downs is surrounded by other properties including Mallapunyah to the north west, Walhallow to the west, Kiana to the north, Calvert Hills Station to the north east, Benmarra to the west, Brunette Downs to the south and Anthony Lagoon to the south west. Several watercourses pass through the property, including Cresswell Creek, Coanjula Creek and Puzzle Creek. The traditional owners of the area are the Wambaia. The first European to visit the area was the explorer Frank Hann in 1881. Pungalina-Seven Emu Sanctuary
Pungalina-Seven Emu Sanctuary is a 3060 km2 private protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) which purchased Pungalina Station in 2009, with some assistance from the Wildlife Australia Fund. It adjoins the Gulf of Carpentaria near the border with Queensland, lying in the Gulf Coastal bioregion. The reserve is bordered by Calvert Hills and Wollogorang Stations to the south and east. The nearest town is Borroloola, 150 km to the west. History The reserve is made up of two separate pastoral properties, Pungalina and Seven Emu.
