Calgary Philharmonic
The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is an orchestra based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The orchestra gives the majority of its performances in the Jack Singer Concert Hall at Arts Commons. It is also the resident orchestra for the Calgary Opera, Alberta Ballet Company, and the Honens International Piano Competition. History The Orchestra has a relatively short history, which began in 1910 with the founding of the First Calgary Symphony by violinist A.P. Howell. In 1947, the New Calgary Symphony was formed by Clayton Hare with members of the Mount Royal Orchestra and the previous Calgary Symphony. In 1955, the Dutch conductor Henry Plukker created the Alberta Philharmonic, which in the same year merged with the Calgary Symphony. The new name for the combined orchestra was the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Pavel Kolesnikov
Pavel Kolesnikov () (born 25 February 1989) is a Russian pianist and chamber musician. Life Born in Novosibirsk, Kolesnikov, the son of scientists, began learning the piano and violin at the age of six. In 2004, at the age of 15, he went to the Novosibirsk State Conservatory, where he studied with Mary Lebenzon until 2007. He is currently continuing his piano studies at the Moscow State Conservatory with Nikolai Lugansky. He has also taken part in master classes with Dmitri Bashkirov, Stephen Kovacevich, Emile Naumoff, Renaud Capuçon, Christian Frank, Mario delli Ponti and has performed in Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Poland and Germany. He lives in London which he describes as a 'perfect place for himself' with his partner, Kazakh pianist Samson Tsoy. The couple are also regular duet concert partners. Roberto Minczuk (born April 23, 1967) is a Brazilian conductor, maestro of the São Paulo Municipal Symphony Orchestra, music director of the New Mexico Philarmonic laureate of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, artistic director of the Campos do Jordão Winter Festival, and conductor emeritus of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra. Early life Minczuk was born in São Paulo. His father was conductor of the São Paulo Military Police choir and teacher of music theory who supported his son's music career. Minczuk studied at the Escola Municipal de Música. When Mincuk was 10, he joined the Municipal Symphony Orchestra playing the French horn, being the youngest musician to do so. Árpád Joó (8 June 1948 – 4 July 2014) was a Hungarian American conductor and concert pianist. Early life Maestro Joó (pronounced: Yo) was born in Budapest in 1948. His grandmother was an eminent pupil of István Thomán, at the Franz Liszt Academy (a direct disciple of Franz Liszt). José Iturbi Báguena (28 November 189528 June 1980) was a Spanish conductor, pianist and harpsichordist. He appeared in several Hollywood films of the 1940s, notably playing himself in the musicals ''Thousands Cheer'' (1943), '' Music for Millions'' (1944), ''Anchors Aweigh'' (1945), ''That Midnight Kiss'' (1949), and ''Three Daring Daughters'' (1948), his only leading role.
