Caldas Department
Caldas () is a department of Colombia named after Colombian patriotic figure Francisco José de Caldas. It is part of the Paisa Region and its capital is Manizales. The population of Caldas is 998,255, and its area is 7,291 km². Caldas is also part of the Colombian Coffee-Growers Axis region along with the Risaralda and Quindio departments. Departments Of Colombia
Colombia is a unitary republic made up of thirty-two departments ( Spanish: ''departamentos'', sing. ''departamento'') and a Capital District ('' Distrito Capital''). Each department has a governor (''gobernador'') and an Assembly (''Asamblea Departamental''), elected by popular vote for a four-year period. The governor cannot be re-elected in consecutive periods. Departments are country subdivisions and are granted a certain degree of autonomy. Departments are formed by a grouping of municipalities (''municipios'', sing. '' municipio''). Paisa Region
A Paisa is someone from a region in the northwest of Colombia, including part of the West and Central ''cordilleras'' of the Andes in Colombia. The Paisa region is formed by the departments of Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío. Some regions of Valle del Cauca Department (north) and Tolima Department (west) culturally identify as ''paisas''. The main cities of the Paisa region are Medellín, Pereira, Manizales and Armenia. The name Paisa derives from the Spanish apocope of ''Paisano'' (countryman), but they are also known as "Antioqueños" (those from the old Antioquia, which included the other Paisa provinces, which was a single administrative body until the creation of the Caldas State in 1905). Although many refer to Paisas as an ethnic group (''raza antioqueña'' or ''raza paisa''), they are a part of the Colombians and Latin American peoples. Marmato, Caldas
Marmato is a town and municipality in the Colombian Department of Caldas. Founded in 1540, Marmato has a population of 10,000 people. It is one of the historic gold-mining regions of the hemisphere. The town used to be the home of a large population of Cornish miners, who were drawn to this location from their native land to work the mines. Strip mining and the murder of a priest In 1946, after various disputes about mining rights, the government established a zone in the hills where the town stands, which was to be the preserve for mining by the various small miners of the town. This was in effect until 2007, when the Canadian mining company Medoro Resources merged with a Colombian company to form the conglomerate called "Gran Colombia Gold". This corporation proposed digging a massive strip mine on the site of the town, which would require the total demolition of the town and the relocation of its populace. Chinchiná, Caldas
Chinchiná (estimated population 84,000) is a municipality located in the department of Caldas in Colombia, southwest of Manizales. Chinchiná is rich in character and beautiful landscapes. Founded in 1857 by Antioquian colonists, Chinchiná is settled in a valley surrounded by coffee plantations, called "fincas", in the Central Cordillera of the Andes. Known as Colombia's coffee heart, the town is home to the Buendía coffee factory and Cenicafé, a coffee research center. Aguadas, Caldas
Aguadas is a town and municipality in the Colombian department of Caldas. It is bordered to the north by Abejorral, to the east by Sonsón, to the southeast by Salamina, to the south by Pacora, to the west by Caramanta and Valparaiso, and to the northwest by La Pintada. The municipality of Aguadas, located in the northern part of the department, was founded in 1808 by José Narciso Estrada.
