Calci is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Pisa in the Italian region Tuscany, located about west of Florence and about east of Pisa. Government ; ''Frazioni'' The main settlement is the municipal seat of La Pieve; the rest of the population is distributed between the other hamlets – ''frazioni'' – of Castelmaggiore, Crespignano, Gabella, Il Colle-Villa, La Corte-San Piero, Pontegrande-Sant'Andrea, Montemagno, Rezzano-Nicosia and Tre Colli. Montemagno, Pisa
The village of Montemagno is situated in the comune of Calci, Province of Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, some 15 km East of Pisa, 2 km East of Calci. The name Montemagno is vulgar for Mons Ianus, Latin for Monte Giano, dedicated to the Roman god Janus (from whom we have the word January). The village is first mentioned in a charter of the in the year 780. The village is surrounded by olive groves. There are three churches in Montemagno. The oldest one is S. Martino, not any longer within the village proper (see below). In 1021 walls were erected around the village, but S. Martino was a few hundred meters away and left out. Within the walls a new church was erected in 1076 (the belltower was founded in 1786 and finished in 1811). The new church is named Santa Maria della Neve. Pisa Charterhouse
Pisa Charterhouse (Calci Charterhouse) is a former Carthusian monastery, and is the home of the Pisa Museum of Natural History. It is 10 km outside Pisa, Tuscany, Italy. The monastery is noted for the fresco of the ''Last Supper'', by Bernardino Poccetti (1597). Charterhouse The Carthusians founded a monastery in 1366/67 in what is called Val Graziosa, a plain overlooked by the Monti Pisani when Francesco Moricotti Prignani was archbishop of Pisa. Shortly afterwards Pope Gregory XI, a noted reformer of monasteries, expelled the monks from the Benedictine Gorgona Abbey, on the island of Gorgona, and gave the island and the estate to the Carthusians of Val Graziosa, who repopulated them. This event must have happened not long before Catherine of Siena's visit of 1375, as she mentions in her letters the need to convert the facilities for the Carthusian use. Pieve Of Saints John And Ermolaus
Saints John and Ermolao, or Pieve di Santi Giovanni ed Ermolao is a Romanesque-style, Roman Catholic parish church, located in La Pieve, Calci, some 10 km outside Pisa, region of Tuscany, Italy. History A church at the site was present in the 11th-century, but expanded after the relics of the martyred saint Ermolao was transferred into this church in 1111. It was restored and expanded in 1617 using designs by Cosimo Pugliani. Within that time, the apse was also expanded and the transept was completed. Throughout the centuries since, the structure has undergone other changes including: an expansion of the left side of the façade, the opening of an entry on the right side, and the construction of the side altars and the arch over the font.
