Calabazar De Sagua
Calabazar de Sagua, also shortened as Calabazar, is a Cuban village and ''consejo popular'' ("people's council", i.e. hamlet) of the municipality of Encrucijada, in Villa Clara Province, Cuba. In 2011 it had a population of 7,912. History Founded in 1865, it was part of the neighboring municipality of Sagua la Grande until the 1977 administrative reform. Geography Located on a rural plain in the middle of its province, Calabazar lies between Encrucijada (4.5 km southeast), El Purio (4 km northeast) and Mata (4.5&km southwest). It is 17 km from Cifuentes, 30 to Vueltas, 32 to Santa Clara, 37 to Sagua la Grande, 40 to Camajuaní, 50 to Remedios and 58 to Placetas and Caibarién. Transport The village is crossed in the middle by the "Circuito Norte" (CN) state highway, the 2nd longest one in the island. Caibarién
Caibarién is a municipality city in the Villa Clara Province, Villa Clara province of Cuba. Caibarién is known as "La Villa Blanca" () for its sands and beaches. They are famous for their "Parrandas" (Carnivals) along with Remedios, Cuba, Remedios (the neighboring town located west) and Camajuani. History The town was founded on October 26, 1832 from a map designed by Estratón Bauza. For his constant concern and tenacity in their efforts, and because he offered some of his lands and also economic concessions to the founding of the town Don Narciso de Justa is considered the founder of Caibarién. Sagua La Grande
Sagua la Grande (nicknamed ''La Villa del Undoso'', sometimes shortened in Sagua) is a municipality located on the north coast of the province of Villa Clara in central Cuba, on the Sagua la Grande River. The city is close to Mogotes de Jumagua, limestone cliffs. Many cays of the Sabana-Camaguey Archipelago are located off the northern coast. People born in Sagua are called "guajiros". History Sagua la Grande was founded in 1812 and established as a municipality in 1842. Parrandas
Parrandas are traditional carnival-like street parties with origins date back to the 19th century. They take place in northern and central cities of the former Las Villas province (now divided into Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus and Ciego de Ávila provinces) in Cuba. Most famous parrandas are celebrated in Remedios colonial city where these festivities were originated. Onelio Jorge Cardoso
Onelio Jorge Cardoso (May 14, 1914 in Calabazar de Sagua, Cuba – May 29, 1986 in Havana, Cuba) was a Cuban editor, screenwriter, short fiction writer and party functionary. Biography and career Cardoso was born in Calabazar de Sagua, nearby Encrucijada, Cuba. He was unable to complete his high school studies due to his family's economic problems, employing himself in different trades to support his family. One of these was as a traveling salesman, a job that allowed him to get to know different places and people within Cuba that would serve as models for the setting and characters of several of his stories. He started writing at a young age, winning a short story writing contest in 1936. However, it was not until 1945 when he became known by winning the "Alfonso Hernández Catá" contest with a story entitled "Coalmen" (''Los carboneros''). The ''Circuito Norte'' (CN), meaning "Northern Circuit", is a west-east highway spanning the length of the island of Cuba, through the Atlantic Coast. Placetas
Placetas () is a city in the Villa Clara Province in the center of Cuba; before the change in the country's government in 1959 the province was called Las Villas. The town is also known as ''La Villa de los Laureles'' because of its wild laurel trees. Placetas is also a ''municipio'', one of 13 subdivisions of the Villa Clara Province. Cuba's geographical center, Guaracabulla, is located in this municipality. History Placetas was founded on September 9, 1861 mainly due to the sugar production industry. Nowadays, the main produce of the area is tobacco. The main contribution to its foundation came from Jose Martinez-Fortun y Erles, a Spanish Marques and former colonel in the Spanish Army.
