Cal Young
Cal Marcellus Young (June 25, 1871 – January 30, 1957), sometimes known as "Mr. Eugene," or "Mr. Lane County," was an American football coach and a pioneer of Eugene, Oregon. He was the first head football coach at the University of Oregon. Early years Young's parents, Charles Walker Young and Mary B. W. (Gillespie) Young, were pioneers of Eugene, Oregon, having settled there in 1852. Young was born in a log cabin on his father's donation land claim in 1871. He attended Bishop Scott Academy (later known as the Hill Military School) in Portland, Oregon. He was a student there from the age of 15 for five years, and was a teacher at the school for two years. For six years, Young owned a meat market in Eugene. He also worked in the Blue River mines for a year and a half, and as the manager of the Heilig Theatre in Portland from 1903 to 1905. Eugene ( ) is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon. Oregon Ducks Football
The Oregon Ducks football program is a college football team for the University of Oregon, located in the U.S. state of Oregon. The team competes at the NCAA Division I level in the FBS and is a member of the Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12). Although now known as the Ducks, the team was commonly called the Webfoots until the mid-1960s. The program first fielded a football team in 1894. Oregon plays its home games at the 54,000 seat Autzen Stadium in Eugene. Its main rivals are the Oregon State Beavers and the Washington Huskies. The Ducks and Beavers historically end each regular season with their rivalry game in late November. The program has been one of the most successful programs since the 2010s. American Football
American football (referred to simply as football in the United States and Canada), also known as gridiron, is a team sport played by two teams of eleven players on a rectangular field with goalposts at each end. Bishop Scott Academy
Bishop Scott Academy was a school located in Portland in the U.S. state of Oregon. Affiliated with the Episcopal Church, the school was named for the Bishop Thomas Fielding Scott. The school opened in 1870 to educate young men in good citizenship and prepare them to enter the ministry. Later a military department was added to the school before the academy closed in 1904. The school organized the first American football team and held the first football game in the Pacific Northwest in 1889. Blue River, Oregon
Blue River is an unincorporated community in Lane County, Oregon, United States. It is located on Oregon Route 126 along the McKenzie River, between the communities of Finn Rock and Rainbow. It is in the Willamette National Forest, where the Blue River empties into the McKenzie. The community was named after the Blue River, which was named for the striking blue color that apparently comes from its rocky bed. Five miles northeast of the community, a dam on the Blue River forms the Blue River Reservoir. History The area was first settled in the late 19th century by the Sparks family. Gold was discovered in the Blue River area in 1863, but by 1912, most gold mining activity had ended. The ore was low grade and the local stamp mills have not operated in many years. Lewis & Clark College is a private liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon. The 1894 college football season was the season of American football played among colleges and universities in the United States during the 1894–95 academic year. The 1894 Yale Bulldogs football team compiled a perfect 16–0 record, outscored opponents by a total of 485 to 13, and has been recognized as the national champion by the Billingsley Report, Helms Athletic Foundation, and National Championship Foundation, and as co-champion by Parke H. Davis. Penn also compiled a perfect record (12–0) and was recognized as the co-national champion by Parke H. Davis.
