Caccuri
Caccuri is a comune and town in the province of Crotone in Calabria, southern Italy. It is the birthplace of Renaissance statesman Cicco Simonetta. Main sights *Caccuri castle, built over Byzantine fortress dating to the 6th century. It was restored several times, the last in 1885. The most visible element is the only tower, called ''Torre Mastrigli'', which is the town's symbol. Currently a great part of the castle is in a state of decay. Cicco Simonetta
Francesco (Cicco) Simonetta (1410 – 30 October 1480) was an Italian Renaissance statesman who composed an early treatise on cryptography. Biography Francesco, nicknamed Cicco, was born in Caccuri, Calabria, and received a fine education. He studied Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and other languages and graduated in civil and canonic law, presumably in Naples. As a young man, he entered the service of the Sforza family as a secretary to condottiero Francesco Sforza and rapidly rose to the top of the administration. He was soon placed in charge of the city of Lodi. In 1441, Francesco Sforza married Bianca Maria Visconti (1425–1468), the illegitimate daughter of Filippo Maria Visconti, 3rd Duke of Milan. On Filippo's death (1447), the so-called Ambrosian Republic had been set up in Milan by the patrician families. 1638 Calabrian Earthquakes
A series of four mainshocks struck Calabria on March 27–28 and June 9, 1638. The first three earthquakes had moment magnitudes estimated to be 6.6–7.1 . On June 9, another mainshock estimated at 6.7 struck the same region, causing further damage and casualties. The four earthquakes resulted in as many as 30,000 fatalities. 1805 Molise Earthquake
The 1805 Molise earthquake occurred on July 26 at 21:01 UTC. It has an estimated magnitude of 6.6 on the equivalent magnitude scale (Me) (calculated from seismic intensity data) and a maximum perceived intensity of X on the Mercalli intensity scale. The area of greatest damage was between the towns of Isernia and Campobasso, while the area of intense damage extended over about 2,000 square kilometres.
