Cab Secure Radio
Cab Secure Radio (CSR) was an in-cab analog transmission, analogue radiotelephone system formerly used on parts of the Rail transport in Great Britain, British railway network. Its main function was to provide a secure communication, secure speech link between the train driver and the Signalman (rail), signaller which could not be overheard by other train drivers. In areas where CSR was used, it had to be the primary method of communication between driver and signaller, always being used in preference to the ''signal post telephone''. CSR was replaced by the GSM-R Digital data, digital system, forming the initial phase of rollout of European Rail Traffic Management System, ERTMS throughout the UK. British Rail Telecommunications was created in 1992 by British Rail (BR). The European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) is the system of standards for management and interoperation of signalling for railways by the European Union (EU). It is conducted by the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) and is the organisational umbrella for the separately managed parts of * GSM–R (communication), * European Train Control System (ETCS, signalling), * European Train Management Layer (ETML, payload management) The main target of ERTMS is to promote the interoperability of trains in the EU. RETB
Radio Electronic Token Block is a system of railway signalling used in the United Kingdom. It is a development of the physical token system for controlling traffic on single lines. The system is slightly similar to North American Direct Traffic Control, which unlike RETB does not have a cab display unit. Operation On arrival at a "token exchange point", the driver reports their position to the signaller by radio and requests the "token" for the next section of line ahead. If the signaller is in a position to do so, they will issue the electronic token applicable to the section ahead. Simultaneously, the driver must operate a button on an apparatus in the cab to receive the token. The token is then transmitted to the train by radio. Train Reporting Number
A train reporting number in Great Britain identifies a particular train service. It consists of: * A single-digit number, indicating the class (type) of train, followed by * A letter, indicating the destination area, followed by * A two-digit number, identifying the individual train or indicating the route (the latter generally for suburban services). The train reporting number is often called the headcode, a throwback to when the number was physically displayed at the head of a train.
