CMLL International Gran Prix (1997)
The CMLL International Gran Prix (1997) was a ''lucha libre'', or professional wrestling, tournament produced and scripted by the Mexican professional wrestling promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL; "World Wrestling Council" in Spanish) which took place on April 4, 1997 in Arena México, Mexico City, Mexico, CMLL's main venue. The 1997 International Gran Prix was the fourth time CMLL has held an International Gran Prix tournament since 1994. All International Gran Prix tournaments have been a one-night tournament, always as part of CMLL's Friday night CMLL Super Viernes shows. The fourth International Gran Prix was a one night, 16-man single elimination tournament consisting of Mexican natives and a number of foreign wrestlers, some of which worked for CMLL on a regular basis (such as Steele and Último Dragón) and others who were invited specially for the tournament (such as Leatherface). Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre Co., Ltd. (CMLL; , "World Wrestling Council") is a ''lucha libre'' professional wrestling promotion based in Mexico City. The promotion was previously known as ''Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre'' (''EMLL'') (''Mexican Wrestling Enterprise''). Founded in 1933, it is the oldest professional wrestling promotion still in existence. CMLL currently recognizes and promotes twelve "World Championships" for various weight divisions and classifications, six national level and six regional level championships. Face (professional Wrestling)
In professional wrestling, a face (babyface) is a heroic, "good guy" or "fan favorite" wrestler, booked (scripted) by the promotion with the aim of being cheered by fans, and acts as a protagonist to the heels, who are the villainous antagonist or "bad guy" characters. Traditionally, they wrestle within the rules and avoid cheating (in contrast to the villains who use illegal moves and call in additional wrestlers to do their work for them) while behaving positively towards the referee and the audience. Such characters are also referred to as blue-eyes in British wrestling and ''técnicos'' in ''lucha libre''. The face character is portrayed as a hero relative to the heel wrestlers, who are analogous to villains. Not everything a face wrestler does must be heroic: faces need only to be clapped or cheered by the audience to be effective characters. Arkangel De La Muerte
Alfredo Pasillas (July 16, 1966 – June 13, 2018) was a Mexican luchador and enmascarado (masked) professional wrestler, best known for his work in the Mexican professional wrestling promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) under the ring name Arkangel de la Muerte. He is often referred to as just Arkangel, and previously worked under the ring name Mister Cid until 1991. His name means "Archangel of Death" in Spanish. In addition to his long in-ring career, Arkangel was most known for being a prolific professional wrestling trainer with CMLL's wrestling school and had a small or large part in training in all wrestlers who worked for CMLL between 2006 and his death in 2018. José Luis Jair Soria (born September 12, 1971) is a Mexican ''luchador'' or professional wrestler, who works under the ring name Shocker. He currently works for Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre in Mexico and has previously worked for AAA in Mexico, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, in the United States and New Japan Pro-Wrestling in Japan. Soria is a second-generation professional wrestler; his father, Rubén Soria, was an active wrestler from 1963 to the 1970s. César Cuauhtémoc González Barrón (9 January 1968 – 11 May 2019) was a Mexican '' luchador enmascarado'' (masked wrestler) and actor. Arturo Casco Hernández (March 17, 1961 – September 12, 2010) was a Mexican ''luchador'', or professional wrestler, best known under the ring name La Fiera, which is Spanish for "The Wild Beast".
