CKGB-FM
CKGB-FM is a Canadian radio station that broadcasts a hot adult contemporary format at 99.3 FM in Timmins, Ontario. The station uses the on-air brand ''KiSS 99.3'' and is owned by Rogers Sports & Media. History The station was launched in late 1933 by young Northern Ontario media entrepreneur Roy Thomson, who would later become the owner of ''The Times'' of London. Thomson acquired the '' Timmins Daily Press'' in 1934, and the newspaper and radio station shared a building and ownership for many years. In the 1940s and 1950s, CKGB was operating on 94.5 FM as CKRT-FM, until it was shut down. The station broadcast on AM from its inception, periodically changing frequencies until its last AM home at 750 in 1984, and adopting a country format in 1990. CJQQ-FM
CJQQ-FM is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting at 92.1 FM in Timmins, Ontario. The station broadcasts a mainstream rock format as ''92.1 Rock''. History The station was originally launched in 1948 by Roy Thomson as CKGB-FM, a simulcast of AM sister station CKGB's CBC Trans-Canada Network programming. Thomson sold the stations in 1972, and the FM station adopted the callsign CFTI-FM in 1976. The stations were subsequently acquired by Telemedia in 1980. In 1984, CFTI was authorized to drop its CBC Radio affiliation as network service was now available in the area from CBC-owned CBCJ-FM. In 1992, Telemedia adopted the station's branding (as ''Q92''), callsign CJQQ and format, which had been successful on Telemedia's CJRQ in Sudbury. CJMX-FM is a Canadian radio station, which broadcasts an adult contemporary format at 105.3 FM in Sudbury, Ontario. The station uses the on-air brand ''KiSS 105.3''. The station is owned by Rogers Sports & Media. History CJMX was established in 1980 by F. Baxter Ricard and Alma Ricard, the owners of Sudbury's CHNO and CFBR. CJMX's studios were located in the old King George School building at 295 Victoria Street until 1997. Its transmitter site was shared with CICI-TV and CIGM-FM near Huron Street in Sudbury. In the 1980s the station was branded as ''CJMX Stereo 105'' and ''FM 105 CJMX''. The stations became part of Mid-Canada Radio in 1985, and were then sold to the Pelmorex Radio Network in 1990. CHMT-FM is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting at 93.1 FM in Timmins, Ontario, Canada. Owned by Vista Radio, it broadcasts a country music format branded as ''Country 93.1'', "Timmins' Best Country". The Haliburton Broadcasting Group was licensed by the CRTC in February 2001 to open up a new English-language commercial FM radio station in Timmins Ontario. The station originally launched in 2001 as an adult contemporary station branded as ''Mix 93''. Some current hot AC/ CHR singles were dayparted into the evening and overnight periods. EZ Rock was a brand of adult contemporary radio stations heard primarily in Canada. The branding was originally created by Telemedia in the mid-1990s for its AC stations, and based on the call sign of its former Toronto flagship CJEZ-FM (now adult hits-formatted CHBM-FM). Via acquisitions, control of the "EZ Rock" brand passed from Telemedia to Astral Media and later Bell Media. Timmins ( ) is a city in northeastern Ontario, Canada, located on the Mattagami River. The city is the fourth-largest city in the Northeastern Ontario region with a population of 41,145 (2021). Adult contemporary music (AC) is a form of radio-played popular music, ranging from 1960s vocal and 1970s soft rock music to predominantly ballad-heavy music of the present day, with varying degrees of easy listening, pop, soul, R&B, quiet storm and rock influence. Adult contemporary is generally a continuation of the easy listening and soft rock style that became popular in the 1960s and 1970s with some adjustments that reflect the evolution of pop/rock music. Adult contemporary tends to have lush, soothing and highly polished qualities where emphasis on melody and harmonies is accentuated. It is usually melodic enough to get a listener's attention, and is inoffensive and pleasurable enough to work well as background music. In broadcasting and radio communications, a call sign (also known as a call name or call letters—and historically as a call signal—or abbreviated as a call) is a unique identifier for a transmitter station. A call sign can be formally assigned by a government agency, informally adopted by individuals or organizations, or even cryptographically encoded to disguise a station's identity. The use of call signs as unique identifiers dates to the landline railroad telegraph system. Because there was only one telegraph line linking all railroad stations, there needed to be a way to address each one when sending a telegram. In order to save time, two-letter identifiers were adopted for this purpose.
