History On May 9, 2012, Hector Broadcasting Company received a licence from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to operate a new English language FM radio station in New Glasgow/Pictou County. The station began broadcasting on September 15, 2014, as ''Classic Rock 97.9''. In November 2017, it was announced that pending approval by the CRTC, this station and its sister CKEC were to be purchased by Newcap Radio, and was included in the sale of Newcap stations to Stingray Group. On January 15, 2021, the station rebranded as ''Q97.9'', as part of a merger of branding and programming with Halifax sister station CFRQ-FM. CFRQ-FM is a Canadian radio station broadcasting at 104.3 FM in Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is owned by Stingray Radio and airs a mainstream rock format. CKEC-FM is a Canadian radio station broadcasting at 94.1 FM in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, owned by the Stingray Group. The station airs a soft adult contemporary format branded as ''94.1 The Breeze''. The transmitter tower is situated on Mount Thom. History The station has been on the air since December 23, 1953. Originally broadcasting at 1230 AM, before moving to 1320 in 1960. In 2006, the station was licensed by the CRTC to convert to the FM dial. As of December 11, 2007, CKEC moved to 94.1 FM. Simulcasting remained on both AM and FM for 90 days, before converting entirely to FM. On October 28, 2011, Hector Broadcasting applied to the CRTC for a new radio station which will broadcast a mix of classic rock and classic hits with some contemporary rock. New Glasgow is a town in Pictou County, in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It is situated on the banks of the East River of Pictou, which flows into Pictou Harbour, a sub-basin of the Northumberland Strait. The town's population was 9,075 in the 2016 census. Pictou County is a county in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada. It was established in 1835, and was formerly a part of Halifax County from 1759 to 1835.
