Stingray Group Radio Stations
Stingrays are a group of sea rays, which are cartilaginous fish related to sharks. They are classified in the suborder Myliobatoidei of the order Myliobatiformes and consist of eight families: Hexatrygonidae (sixgill stingray), Plesiobatidae (deepwater stingray), Urolophidae (stingarees), Urotrygonidae (round rays), Dasyatidae (whiptail stingrays), Potamotrygonidae (river stingrays), Gymnuridae (butterfly rays) and Myliobatidae (eagle rays). WHAS (840 AM) is a radio station owned by iHeartMedia, Inc. and licensed to Louisville, Kentucky. Its studios are located in the Louisville enclave of Watterson Park, and the transmitter site is in Long Run, in far east Jefferson County. First licensed in July 1922, it is the oldest radio station in Kentucky. WHAS is a clear channel station, operating around the clock on 840 kHz with 50,000 watts. A clear-channel station is an AM radio station in North America that has the highest protection from interference from other stations, particularly concerning night-time skywave propagation. CKKY-FM is a Canadian radio station that broadcasts at 101.9 FM in Wainwright, Alberta. The station is branded as '' Boom 101.9'' with a classic hits format and is owned by Stingray Group. History The station began broadcasting in 1984 as 1230 CILW. In 1991, the station moved from 1230 to 830, upon approval by the CRTC. CILW changed its callsign to CKKY sometime in the 1990s, adopting the moniker ''Key 83''.
