CGTN (formerly known as CCTV-9 and CCTV News) is a state-run English-language news channel based in Beijing, China. It is one of six channels provided by China Global Television Network, owned by the Chinese state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), under the control of the Publicity Department of the Chinese Communist Party. CCTV-9 was launched on 25 September 2000, rebranded as CCTV News on 26 April 2010. On 6 February 2012, CGTN America was launched, with a schedule of daily programming originating from a production center in Washington, D.C. On 11 January 2012, CCTV Africa was launched in Nairobi, Kenya. All channels and divisions in the CCTV International group were rebranded as CGTN on 31 December 2016. Edwin Maher
Edwin Maher is a New Zealand-born TV journalist who worked for CCTV International in Beijing before retiring in 2017. Maher established his broadcast career in Australia, working many minor roles, particularly as a weatherman, in many cities before beginning a 25-year stint with Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1979. He is mostly remembered in Melbourne for his use of a varied and creative number of viewer submitted pointers to highlight items when delivering the ABC's Victorian state weather forecast. In 2003, China Central Television sought to expand its CCTV International to be more professional and accessible to Western audiences. James Chau
James Chau (Chinese: 周柳建成١-.. ''Zhōuliǔ'' ''Jiànchéng'') who was born on 11 December 1977, is a journalist, television presenter, and United Nations goodwill ambassador. He previously anchored the main evening news on state-owned China Central Television (CCTV). In 2009, he was appointed by the United Nations as China's first UNAIDS goodwill ambassador. He wrote a newspaper column for the Chinese Communist Party-owned tabloid ''Global Times''. Liu Xin (; born 10 November 1975) is a host and journalist for the English-language Chinese government-broadcaster China Global Television Network (CGTN), now hosting the opinion show named ''The Point with Liu Xin'' on weekdays at CGTN. She is fluent in Mandarin, English and French, and conversational in German and Turkish. Biography Liu was born in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, China. She attended Nanjing University, one of the top universities in China, between 1993 and 1997. She majored in English language and literature. In 1996, Liu became the first Chinese student to participate in and win the International Public Speaking Competition in London. Vimbayi Kajese is a Zimbabwean journalist who first came to international attention as a news presenter for China Central Television's CCTV-9 from 2009-2011. She was the first African anchorwoman in the station's history, and her success helped pave the way for the network's expanded presence on the continent, and eventual launch of programs like Africa Live from its Nairobi Bureau which was established in 2012.
