Wheelchair Basketball At The 2012 Summer Paralympics
Wheelchair basketball at the 2012 Summer Paralympics was held from 30 August to 8 September. Competitions were held at the newly built Basketball Arena, which seated 10,000 spectators, and The O2 Arena (renamed "North Greenwich Arena" during the games due to sponsorship rules). Australia were the defending champions of the men's championship, while the United States were the defending champions of the women's championship. Competition format In the men's tournament, twelve qualified nations were drawn into two groups, each consisting of six teams, where each team met the other teams once. The four highest placed teams in each group then advanced to a knock-out round to decide the medals and 4th to 8th places. The fifth-placed teams met each other over the 9th and 10th places, and the sixth-placed teams met each other over the 11th and 12th places. Basketball Arena (London)
The Basketball Arena for the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics was located in the Olympic Park in Stratford, London. The arena was designed to be fully recyclable, and was dismantled in January 2013, the seating was sold to Barnet owner Tony Kleanthous to be used in the construction of The Hive Stadium. History London's Olympic bid proposed that there would be four arenas in the Olympic Park, but the revised masterplan published in 2006 reduced this to three, with the volleyball matches being moved to Earls Court Exhibition Centre. The fencing arena was also cancelled, and the fencing took place at ExCeL. The Basketball Arena had 12,000 seats for Olympic basketball and the semi-finals and finals of Olympic handball, and 10,000 for Paralympic wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. 2011 Parapan American Games
The 4th Parapan American Games took place from November 12 to 20 in Guadalajara, Mexico. The Games are an international multi-sport event for athletes with a physical disability. The Games were held 20 days after the 2011 Pan American Games began. Patrick Anderson (basketball)
Patrick Anderson (born 22 August 1979) is a Canadian wheelchair basketball player. Personal life Anderson was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and he grew up in Fergus, Ontario. At the age of nine he was hit by a drunk driver, and as a result lost both his legs below the knee. Because of this, he is classified as a 4.5-point player for competition. Basketball Anderson is widely considered to be one of the best wheelchair basketball players in the world. He began playing the sport in 1990 and was first chosen for the Canadian national team in 1997. He led the Canadian Junior Men's National Team to victories in the World Championships in 1997 and 2001, and was named MVP at both competitions. Abditatch "Abdi" Fatah Dini (born 1 January 1981) is a professional Canadian wheelchair basketball player. He is currently on the Canadian Team and has won numerous medals in his international career. He has also received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. Personal Dini was born on 1 January 1981 in Somalia and now resides in Scarborough, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He became paralytic when he was injured by a roadside bomb. Richard Peter (basketball)
Richard "Bear" Peter (born September 10, 1972) is a Canadian First Nations wheelchair basketball player. Peter was born in Duncan, British Columbia, and currently resides in Vancouver. When Richard was four years old, he was injured in a bus accident, leaving him in a wheelchair ever since. He began playing wheelchair basketball at the age of 15 when he was inspired by a team that came to his school and introduced him to wheelchair sports. David "Dave" Durepos (born July 14, 1968) is a Canadian retired wheelchair basketball player. He is married to fellow Paralympian Sabrina Pettinicchi. As a member of Team Canada, Durepos competed in five Paralympic Games where he won 3 gold medals along with one silver. On September 25, 2012, the City of Fredericton proclaimed that date to be Dave Durepos Day. Early life Durepos was born on July 14, 1968, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. He attended and graduated from the New Brunswick Community College in 1984 with a degree in Steel Fabrication. The 2010 Wheelchair Basketball World Championship was held in Birmingham, Great Britain from 7 to 17 July 2010. Both the men's and women's tournaments were held. The Championships was a qualifying event for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Medalists Squads Each of the 12 men's and 10 women's teams selected a squad of 12 players for the tournament.
