West Virginia Mountaineers Baseball
The West Virginia Mountaineers baseball team is the varsity intercollegiate baseball program of West Virginia University, located in Morgantown, West Virginia, United States. The program has been a member of the NCAA Division I Big 12 Conference since the start of the 2013 season. The program currently plays at Monongalia County Ballpark in the adjacent city of Granville. Randy Mazey has been the team's head coach since prior to the 2013 season. As of the end of the 2019 season, the program has appeared in 13 NCAA Tournaments. It has won five conference tournament championships and 15 regular season conference and division titles. History The program began varsity play in 1892 and had an above-.500 winning percentage in each season until 1920, when the team had a 10–11 record. Big 12 Conference
The Big 12 Conference is a college athletic conference headquartered in Irving, Texas, USA. It consists of ten full-member universities. It is a member of Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for all sports. Its football teams compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS; formerly Division I-A), the higher of two levels of NCAA Division I football competition. Its 10 members, in the states of Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia, include two private Christian universities and eight public universities. 2012 NCAA Division I Baseball Season
The 2012 NCAA Division I baseball season, play of college baseball in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level, began on February 17, 2012. The season progressed through the regular season, many conference tournaments and championship series, and concluded with the 2012 NCAA Division I baseball tournament and 2012 College World Series. Charles Hockenberry
Charles E. Hockenberry (June 21, 1918 – March 15, 2007) was an American football, basketball, baseball player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the West Virginia University Institute of Technology from 1947 to 1948, compiling a record of 10–8. Hockenberry was also the head baseball coach at West Virginia University in 1947, tallying a mark of 9–7. Playing career Hockenberry earned his Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia University in 1941. While there, he lettered in baseball, football, and basketball. Ira Rodgers
Ira Errett "Rat" Rodgers (May 26, 1895 – February 15, 1963) was an American football, basketball, baseball, and golf player and coach. He played college football for West Virginia University where he was selected as an All-American in 1919. He also served as the school's head football coach from 1925 to 1930 and again from 1943 to 1945. Collegiate career Rodgers was a high school standout football player, who was recruited by powerhouse schools such as the University of Pittsburgh and Washington & Jefferson College. In 1915, however, Mountaineer coach Mont McIntyre won the honors of Rodgers, who started his first game of the season as a quarterback. He played quarterback most of his freshman season, until later in the season when he was moved to fullback. He played fullback for the next three years of his career. Skeeter Shelton
Andrew Kemper "Skeeter" Shelton (June 29, 1888 – January 9, 1954) was a Major League Baseball outfielder. He was born and died in Huntington, West Virginia. Shelton played for the New York Yankees in the season, appearing in 10 consecutive games over an eight-day period from August 25 to September 1. In his ten career games, he had one hit in 40 at-bats for a .025 batting average. At center field, he was perfect, handling 22 total chances (20 putouts, 2 assists). He batted and threw right-handed. Charlie Hickman
Charles Taylor Hickman (May 4, 1876 – April 19, 1934) was an American professional baseball player and college baseball coach. He played all or part of 12 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a utility player for seven different franchises, including over 200 games each with the Cleveland Bronchos / Naps, Washington Senators, and New York Giants. After his professional carer, he coached the West Virginia Mountaineers baseball team for four seasons. Carl Schurz Forkum (November 23, 1882 – March 19, 1934) was an American football and baseball player and coach. He served as the 11th head football coach at West Virginia University West Virginia University (WVU) is a public land-grant research university with its main campus in Morgantown, West Virginia. West Virginia Black Bears
The West Virginia Black Bears are a collegiate summer baseball team of the MLB Draft League. They are located in Granville, West Virginia, and play their home games at Monongalia County Ballpark, which is across the Monongahela River from Morgantown and West Virginia University. From 2015 to 2020, they were a Minor League Baseball team of the New York–Penn League. They were the Class A Short Season affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates from their inception until MLB's reorganization of the minors after the 2020 season. In August 2014, it was announced that the Jamestown Jammers would cease operations and move to Morgantown. On October 22, the team announced that they would be named the "Black Bears" following a fan vote, as the American black bear is the state animal of West Virginia. NCAA Division I Independent Schools (baseball)
NCAA Division I independent schools are four-year institutions that compete in college athletics at the NCAA Division I level, but do not belong to an established athletic conference for a particular sport. Big East Conference (1979–2013)
The Big East Conference was a collegiate athletics conference that consisted of as many as 16 universities in the eastern half of the United States from 1979 to 2013. The conference's members participated in 24 NCAA sports. The conference had a history of success at the national level in basketball throughout its history, while its shorter (1991 to 2013) football program, created by inviting one college and four other "associate members" (their football programs only) into the conference, resulted in two national championships. In basketball, Big East teams made 18 Final Four appearances and won 7 NCAA championships as Big East members through 2013 (UConn with three, Georgetown, Syracuse, Louisville and Villanova with one each).
