Concept Vehicle
A concept car (also known as a concept vehicle, show vehicle or prototype) is a car made to showcase new styling and/or new technology. They are often exhibited at motor shows to gauge customer reaction to new and radical designs which may or may not be mass-produced. General Motors designer Harley Earl is generally credited with inventing the concept car, and did much to popularize it through its traveling Motorama shows of the 1950s. Concept cars never go into production directly. In modern times all would have to undergo many changes before the design is finalized for the sake of practicality, safety, regulatory compliance, and cost. Toyota concept vehicles produced between 1935 and 1969 include: A1 (1935) The A1 was made in May 1935 as Toyota's first complete vehicle. It entered production in slightly modified form in 1936 as the AA. Sports (1957) The Toyota Sports was a concept vehicle made by Toyota in 1957. It was equipped with a 697 cc engine, and the Toyota Sports X and Toyota Sports 800 were based on it. Sports X (1961) The Sports X was a concept car shown at the 1961 Tokyo Motor Show. Toyota Concept Vehicles (1970–1979)
EX–7 (1970) The EX-7 was a 2-seat concept car made by Toyota and shown during the 1970 Tokyo Motor Show. It was an experiment (hence 'EX') to see what a supercar based on the Toyota 7 (hence '-7') racing car would be like. The mid mounted engine was similar to the Toyota 7 engine except that EX-7 did not have turbochargers. The Toyota 7 had but the EX-7 was detuned down to for road use. Transmission was by a manual gearbox as part of a transaxle. Double wishbone independent suspension was on all 4 wheels and vented disc brakes were used on both the front and rear. The body shape was similar to that of other supercars of the time, like the Mercedes C111, with a long flat nose blended into a long windscreen and a high rear with a vertical cutoff. The doors were shaped like a typical gull-wing door but unusually the hinge was at the rear of the roof section of the door and each door opened to the rear. Toyota Concept Vehicles produced between 1980 and 1989 include: HiLux RV-3 (1980) The Toyota HiLux RV-3 is a concept vehicle made by Toyota in 1980. It entered production as the third generation Hilux. DV-1 (1981) The Toyota DV-1 was introduced in 1981. It is a Welcab style, and was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. The car is designed for individuals with severe upper extremity disabilities. Based on the Toyota Corolla 1500SE passenger car, the DV-1 has been modified so that operations normally performed by the hands can be performed instead by other parts of the body. For example, the doors can be opened and closed with the feet. The car can be steered with the left leg. The shift lever, switches, parking brake and other devices can be operated with the right leg and right shoulder, and the turn signal switch with the head. TownAce Van EV (1991) The TownAce Van EV is a battery-electric prototype of the R20 series TownAce. Avalon (1991) Unveiled in 1991, at the 29th Tokyo Auto Show, the Avalon was a concept vehicle designed by Calty. It was a 4-door convertible where the windshield would retract and cover the passenger compartment when the vehicle was parked and secured. It could only be driven with the top open with the roof serving as the windshield, with two additional glass panels that would retract rearward and stack behind the rear seats. It was roughly the size of the Toyota Corolla Ceres. The doors were not installed with side windows which means in inclement weather the passengers were exposed, in a similar fashion to touring car bodystyles of the early 1900s. It did not appear to have any direct relation to the Avalon sedan that was later placed into production. This is a list of concept vehicles from Toyota for the years 2010–2019. T Sports (2010) The Toyota T Sports is a concept car made by Toyota in 2010. It was shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. FT-86 G Sports (2010) The Toyota FT-86 G Sports Concept is a modification of the Toyota FT-86 Concept manufactured jointly by Toyota and Subaru and shown at the January 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon as part of the Toyota G Sports range. The FT-86 G Sports Concept differs from the original FT-86 in the use of carbon fibre panels, a vented bonnet, a large rear spoiler, new 19 inch wheels and a custom exhaust.
