Table Tennis At The 2015 Pan American Games
Table tennis competitions at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto were held from July 19 to 25 at the Markham Pan Am Centre (Atos Markham Pan Am Centre) in Markham. Due to naming rights, the arena was known as the latter for the duration of the games. A total of four table tennis events were held: two each for men and women. The winners of each the individual events, provided they are not already qualified, qualified to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Venue The competitions took place at the Atos Markham Pan Am Centre (Markham Pan Am Centre) located in the city of Markham, about 31 kilometers from the athletes village. The arena had capacity of 2,000 people per session (1,000 permanent seating + 1,000 temporary seats). The venue also hosted badminton competitions earlier during the games. Markham Pan Am Centre
The Markham Pan Am Centre is a multi-purpose community and aquatics centre located in the new downtown area of Markham, Ontario, Canada. The facility was designed to host the badminton, table tennis and water polo events for the 2015 Pan American Games, held in nearby Toronto in July and August, 2015. The venue also hosted the table tennis competition in the 2015 Parapan American Games. During the Pan Am and Parapan American Games the venue was known as the ''Atos Markham Pan Am / Parapan American Centre''. Brian O'Neill Afanador Pérez (born March 6, 1997) is a Puerto Rican table tennis player. On April 2, 2016, Afanador made history becoming the first Puerto Rican male table tennis player to qualify for the Olympic Games. On June 3, 2016, Afanador upset number 10 seeded and number 44 in the International Table Tennis Federation world ranking Bojan Tokič at the 2016 ITTF Slovenia Open in Otočec, Slovenia. Pierre-Luc Thériault (born October 25, 1993, in St-Fabien, Quebec) is a Canadian table tennis player. Pierre-Luc Thériault wanted to represent Canada since watching the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and seeing other athletes proudly perform for their countries. Thériault began playing for the Canadian Cadet National Team as a 13-year-old, progressing to the Canadian Junior National Team before joining the Canadian Senior National Team in 2010. That year he also debuted at the ITTF World Championships. He has been on the Canadian World Championship Team ever since. Eugene Wang (born Wang Zhen 王臻 on November 13, 1985 in Shijiazhuang) is a Canadian table tennis player. He was given permission to compete for Canada in June 2012, allowing him to represent Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the men's team event. He trains in Saarbruken, Germany. In June 2016, he was officially named to Canada's 2016 Olympic team. Thiago Farias Monte Monteiro (; born June 15, 1981 in Fortaleza, Ceará), is a Brazilian table tennis player. He has won several medals in single, double, and team events in the Pan American Games and currently plays for Angers Vaillante in France. He is referred to as the next Hugo Hoyama and is currently ranked #1 player in Brazil and #21 in France. Gustavo Tsuboi (born 31 May 1985, São Paulo) is a table tennis player from Brazil, he won three medals in double and team events in the Pan American Games. Along with Hugo Hoyama and Thiago Monteiro, Tsuboi was part of the winning team at the 2007 Pan American Games and 2011 Pan American Games. Tsuboi won the gold medal at the inaugural 2011 Latin American Cup held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil after defeating Paraguay's Marcelo Aguirre 4–0. Hugo Marinho Borges Calderano (born 22 June 1996, in Rio de Janeiro) is a table tennis player from Brazil. In January 2022, he peaked at number 3 in the world rankings, becoming the greatest Americas player of all time. He is the first-ever player from Latin America to reach the Top 10 of the ITTF World Rankings.
