Syktyvkar (, , ; , ) is the capital city of the Komi Republic in Russia, as well as its largest city. It is also the administrative center of the Syktyvkar Urban Okrug. Until 1930, it was known as Ust-Sysolsk after the Sysola, Sysola River. Etymology The city's name comes from ''Syktyv'', the Komi language, Komi name for the Sysola River, and ''kar'', meaning "city" in the Komi language. Geography Syktyvkar is located on the Sysola River, which is the origin of its former name Ust-Sysolsk. The city is located close to where the Sysola joins the larger Vychegda River, which is itself a branch of the Northern Dvina. History It is believed that the city was founded in 1586 as a settlement Ust-Sysola. It was granted city status by Catherine the Great in 1780, and in 1992, it became the capital of the Komi Republic. Komi Language
Komi (, ), also known as Zyran, Zyrian or Komi-Zyryan (),. is the native language of the Komi (Zyrians). It is one of the Permian languages; the other regional varieties are Komi-Permyak, which has official status, and Komi-Yazva. Komi is spoken in the Komi Republic and other parts of Russia such as Nenetsia and Yamalia. There were 285,000 speakers in 1994, which decreased to 160,000 in 2010. It was formerly written in the Old Permic script created by Stephen of Perm for liturgical purposes in the 14th century, though very few texts exist in this script. The Cyrillic script was introduced by Russian missionaries in the 17th century, replacing it. A tradition of secular works of literature in the modern form of the language dates back to the 19th century. Syktyvkar Southwest is an unfinished and abandoned airport in Komi, Russia located 19 km southwest of Syktyvkar. JSC Komiinteravia () was an airline based in Syktyvkar, Komi Republic, Russia. It operated scheduled domestic passenger services, as well as passenger and cargo charter flights to domestic and international destinations. Its main base was Syktyvkar Airport. Parent company UTair Aviation reorganised Komiinteravia into a new airline UTair Express, which received a certificate in commercial air transport operations on Antonov An-24 aircraft in December 2006. History The airline was established in March 1996 and started operations in July 1997. In 2004 UTair gained control of more than 70% of Komiinteravia (carried 200,000 passengers in 2003). UTair is planning to set up a new regional division using its subsidiary Komiinteravia that will operate as UTair Express using Antonov An-24 and ATR 42-300 aircraft.
