Swiss Chocolate
Swiss chocolate is chocolate produced in Switzerland. While cacao beans and other ingredients such as sugar cane originate from outside Switzerland, the actual production of the chocolate must take place in Switzerland. Switzerland's chocolates have earned an international reputation for high quality with many famous international chocolate brands. Switzerland is particularly renowned for its milk chocolate. In 1875, a Swiss confectioner, Daniel Peter, developed the first solid milk chocolate using condensed milk, which had been invented by Henri Nestlé, who was Peter's neighbour in Vevey. Charles-Amédée Kohler
Charles-Amédée Kohler (born Charles-Gottlieb Kohler; 15 June 1790 – 15 September 1874) was a Swiss chocolatier and entrepreneur who founded Chocolat Kohler. He notably invented hazelnut chocolate, in his factory opened in 1830 in Lausanne. After his death the Kohler company continued in the Swiss chocolate industry. It merged in 1904 with the Daniel Peter, Peter and in 1911 with the Cailler chocolate brands; before being finally purchased by Nestlé in 1929. Biography Kohler was born on 15 June 1790 in Lausanne, to Gottlieb (later known by the gallicized version of his name, Amédée) Kohler, a merchant of colonial goods and wine from Büren an der Aare, and Anne Ernst. Rodolphe Lindt
Rudolf Lindt (16 July 1855 – 20 February 1909), often known by his francized name Rodolphe Lindt, was a Swiss chocolate maker, chocolatier and inventor. He founded the Lindt brand of Swiss chocolate and invented the conching machine and other processes to improve the quality of chocolate. Life Lindt was born on 16 July 1855 in Bern, to pharmacist and politician Johann Rudolf Lindt and his wife Amalia Eugenia Salchli. Between 1873 and 1875 he did an apprenticeship in Lausanne with the ''Amédée Kohler & Fils'' chocolate company, then managed by the sons of Charles-Amédée Kohler. In 1879 he founded his own chocolate factory in the Mattequartier, a section of the Old City of Bern. In December 1879 he succeeded in improving the quality of chocolate by the development of the conching machine, a lengthwise stirring device which gives a finer consistency and lets undesired aromas evaporate. Maestrani
Maestrani is a Swiss chocolate producer based in Flawil (St. Gallen). It was founded in 1852 in Lucerne by Aquilino Maestrani (1814 - 1880), a Ticinese chocolatier from Aquila. The company became prosperous after it was moved to St. Gallen in 1859. The company also owns two other chocolate brands: Minor and Munz. History Ludovico "Aquilino" Maestrani came from Aquila in the Blenio Valley. He had learned the art of chocolate making from his father Giusepe in Lugano. Chocolat Kohler was a chocolate producer based in Lausanne, founded in 1830 by the Kohler brothers. It is currently a brand owned by Nestlé. History The Kohler chocolate factory was one of the first in Switzerland, shortly following that of Cailler. Chocolat Suchard
Chocolat Suchard was a chocolate factory founded in Serrières (a neighborhood of Neuchâtel) by Philippe Suchard in 1826. It was one of the oldest chocolate factories in Switzerland. History The Suchard chocolate factory took off thanks to his son Philippe (1834-1883), then to his son-in-law Carl Russ (1838-1925), who ran the chocolate company from 1884 to 1924. After Philippe's death in 1884 in Neuchâtel, his daughter Eugénie Suchard and her husband Carl Russ-Suchard, took over the functioning of his factory.
