Spawn (comics)
Spawn is a superhero/antihero appearing in a monthly comic book of the same name published by American company Image Comics, as well as in a number of films, television series, and video game adaptations set in the Image Universe. Created by Todd McFarlane, Spawn first appeared in ''Spawn'' #1 (May 1992). The series has spun off several other comics, including ''Angela (comics), Angela'', ''Curse of the Spawn'', ''Sam and Twitch, Sam & Twitch'', and the Japanese manga ''Shadows of Spawn.'' Todd McFarlane
Todd McFarlane (; born March 16, 1961) is a Canadian comic book creator, artist, writer, filmmaker and entrepreneur, best known for his work as the artist on ''The Amazing Spider-Man'' and as the creator, writer, and artist on the superhero horror-fantasy series ''Spawn (comics), Spawn.'' In the late 1980s and early 1990s, McFarlane became a comic book superstar due to his work on Marvel Comics' ''Spider-Man'' franchise, on which he was the artist to draw the first full appearances of the character Venom (Marvel Comics character), Venom. In 1992, he helped form Image Comics, pulling the occult anti-hero character Spawn (comics), Spawn from his high school portfolio and updating him for the 1990s. ''Shadows of Spawn'' is a licensed Japanese manga adaptation of Todd McFarlane's American ''Spawn'' comic series, written and drawn by Juzo Tokoro. Angela (comics)
Angela is a fictional superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by author Neil Gaiman and artist Todd McFarlane, the character first appeared in McFarlane's creator-owned series ''Spawn'', making her debut in issue #9 in March 1993, and later starring in her own self-titled miniseries. She is an angel and a bounty hunter, working under the auspices of Heaven to oppose Spawn. The character was later the subject of a legal battle between McFarlane and Gaiman over the rights to the character, which Gaiman won. The Image Universe (IU) is a fictional universe in which some stories published by Image Comics take place. It was introduced in the early years of the publisher, shared by the various creators who formed the Image partnership. The independent, creator-owned nature of their work led to limited interaction between their characters, and little coordination of the Image Universe as a shared setting. An antihero (sometimes spelled as anti-hero) or antiheroine is a main character in a story who may lack conventional heroic qualities and attributes, such as idealism, courage, and morality.
