Sogndal is a municipality in Vestland county, Norway. It is located on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden in the traditional district of Sogn. The village of Hermansverk is the administrative center of Sogndal municipality. Other villages include Kaupanger, Kjørnes, Fimreite, Nornes, and Fjærland. Sogndal Airport, Haukåsen is located southwest of Kaupanger. The Norwegian dialect spoken in Sogndal is called '' sognamål''. In 1917, a farmer in Sogndal (Kato Linde) plowed up the Eggja stone, a gravestone with runic inscriptions important for the history of the Old Norse language. Sogndal Airport, Haukåsen
Sogndal Airport ( no, Sogndal lufthavn; ) is a regional airport serving Sogndal Municipality and the surrounding area in Vestland, Norway. It is situated at Haukåsen, from Kaupanger and from Sogndalsfjøra. It serves the whole Sogn district. The airport consists of a runway aligned 06/24. Services are provided by Widerøe on public service obligation with the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The airport is owned and operated by the state-owned Avinor and served 70,244 passengers in 2014. The airport opened on 1 July 1971 along with three other regional airports in Sogn og Fjordane and Sunnmøre. These were at first connected to Bergen and Ålesund using the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter. Fjærland
Fjærland or Mundal is a village in Sogndal Municipality, at the end of the Fjærlandsfjorden, in Vestland county, Norway. The Fjærlandfjorden is a branch going north off the Sognefjorden, the longest fjord in Norway. The village area is located about northwest of the municipal center of Sogndalsfjøra, along the Norwegian National Road 5. The village and its surrounding area encompass rich farming country, including the nearby areas of Bøyum and Oygard. The glacier arms Bøyabreen and Supphellebreen (a part of the Jostedalsbreen glacier) and the Norwegian Glacier Museum are located nearby. Nornes, Norway
Nornes or Norane is a village in Sogndal Municipality in Vestland county, Norway. The village is located on the northern shore of the Sogndalsfjorden, just east of its mouth where it empties into the main Sognefjorden. The village of Fimreite lies across the fjord from Nornes. The village sits about southwest of the municipal centre of Sogndalsfjøra and about east of the village of Hermansverk. Norum Church is located on the east side of Nornes. Norwegian County Road 55 runs through the village, connecting it to Sogndalsfjøra and Hermansverk. Commemoration In 1984, a memorial stone was unveiled by King Olav V of Norway to commemorate the 800-year anniversary of the Battle of Fimreite. Balestrand Municipality
Balestrand is a former municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It was located on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden in the traditional district of Sogn. The administrative center was the village of Balestrand. Other villages in the municipality included Ese, Kvamme, Låne, Sæle, Tjugum, and Vetlefjorden. The municipality was situated at the confluence of the Fjærlandsfjorden/Esefjorden and the main Sognefjorden. The major industries in the municipality were tourism and farming. Balestrand became popular early due to the interest of artists, such as Hans Gude, Kjartan Lauritzen, Alfred Heaton Cooper, Hans Dahl, and Johannes Flintoe. Sogn is a traditional district in Western Norway ''(Vestlandet)''. It is located in the county of Vestland, surrounding the Sognefjord, the largest/longest fjord in Norway. Fimreite
Fimreite is a small village in the municipality of Sogndal in Vestland county, Norway. The village sits on the south side of the mouth of the Sogndalsfjorden, where it empties into the main Sognefjorden. It is located near the end of a peninsula about southwest of the village of Sogndalsfjøra and about southwest of the village of Kaupanger. The village of Nornes lies across the Sogndalsfjorden from Fimreite. Fimreite was the site of the Battle of Fimreite in 1184, a naval battle during the civil war era in Norway. One set of the Sognefjord Spans crosses the Sognefjorden just west of Fimreite. Frudal Tunnel
The Frudal Tunnel ( no, Frudalstunnelen) is a road tunnel along the Norwegian National Road 5 in the municipality of Sogndal in Vestland county, Norway. The tunnel begins at the Frudalen farm, goes through the mountains under the Frudalsbreen glacier, and exits at the small Berge farm area. The tunnel was opened on 29 October 1994 to connect the Fjærland area to the rest of the region. Prior to its opening in 1994, there was no way to get from Sogndal to Fjærland (in Balestrand) other than by driving from Sogndal to Leikanger and then taking a ferry to Fjærland—quite a long journey. The only road connection to Fjærland was via the Fjærland Tunnel to Jølster Municipality to the northwest (that tunnel was built in 1986). Leikanger () is a former municipality in Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. It was located on the northern shore of the Sognefjorden in the traditional district of Sogn. Vestland
Vestland is a county in Norway established on 1 January 2020. The county is located in Western Norway and it is centred around the city of Bergen, Norway's second largest city. The administrative centre of the county is the city of Bergen, where the executive and political leadership is based, but the County Governor is based in Hermansverk.
